I mean, yeah, I'll be rewatching the seasons again. I've already done a S1 rewatch twice, so S2 will definitely be happening. I've watched Subspace Rhapsody 7 times just by itself, listened to the soundtrack about 10 times now all the way through, and the Klingon K-Pop scene is up to 290 watches.

It does get depressing knowing we're two years away from whatever happens in the next episode. Capitalism sucks. :(

I actually haven't done a SNW rewatch outside of watching a few episodes repeatedly (including this one). That's why I'm excited for that.
Oh, I couldn't wait.
After it finished, I did a rewatch, and then waited before season 2 and did another one. It's honestly my favorite new Star Trek.

Is this the first time we have finished a season of live action without the next season being in the can, in progress or knowing when the next season would even start filming? (UK timescale question).

La’an’s solo is my favorite, with all the deepest respects to Uhura’s. Christina Chong’s voice just does it. She’s incredibly talented.

I also know that Kirk’s presence has been controversial to some this season, as is Paul Wesley’s portrayal. As a fan whose favorite character is Kirk, and who loves Shatner…I have to say that I love this version of James Kirk and I’m really glad we are getting to spend time with him on this show. I think he’s great.

He actually sings as Kirk. Not as Shat, but as Kirk.

I'm honestly not certain. Lower Decks S3 was approved while season 2 was still airing. Discovery has been pre-approved well before its end of season date. I think this may be the first time, outside of pandemic issues, that a Star Trek series season is finishing without already filming for the next season approved or underway.

No. It happened with PICARD S1 during COVID-19 lockdown. Its S1 finished, but S2 production was not even started.

Not my cup of tea unfortunately this week - which is a shame as I do like a well-done musical. What let it down for me was actually the music - the songs weren't memorable, despite some stellar vocals from the cast. I did appreciate the effort to move along the various character arcs, but I just found I was more interested when the songs weren't happening and that is never a good sign.

For whatever it's worth, I found I liked the songs a lot more when I gave the soundtrack a listen. For whatever reason the music connected with me more then.

Buffy is the gold standard when it comes to musical episodes, and comparisons are inevitable - it really felt to me that Once More With Feeling substantially moved the story forward and was kind of pivotal to that (and the songs were SUPER catchy). This just felt like it will be forgotten by next week, and to me that makes the whole musical thing a bit gimmicky for my taste.

I don't agree, actually. There are at least three major character arcs that have been fundamentally changed by "Subspace Rhapsody." The first, of course, being Christine dumping Spock, in front of everyone, in a song. That ain't going away any time soon. The second being Spock's decision to recommit more strongly to Vulcan stoicism -- a decision that carries him all the way through to his encounter with V'Ger in The Motion Picture, presumably. And the third is La'an's decision to stop trying to emotionally isolate herself and take the risk of forging meaningful relationships for what appears to be the first time in her adult life.

First contact felt nothing like aliens.

Not only did it use many of the same plot points as Aliens, but it was also clearly a Star Trek version of a zombie movie.

It's really hard for me to put a finger on this episode. I wanted to like it. I'm a hobby musician, but I don't like musicals. I'm more of a classic rock, metal with sung vocals, blues, funk, jazz sort of listener.
Similarly to other people here, I thought that in contrast to the producers' apparent intent to have Gooding as the star, for me Chong had the far better voice. I listened to Gooding's live performances on Youtube way before this episode, and she blew me away (as had her mom), but in Subspace Rhapsody they made her go falsetto for her high parts and I hated that, because I'd heard that she can belt those ranges out. Chong on the other hand had free reign in her highs and it was glorious. I don't know whose choice it was to have them sing this way. This was the musician's rant part.

I would have preferred to have the emotional arcs to play out in normal episodes instead of these *fun* ones of 7 and 9.

I appreciate the risktaking and I still love SNW especially opposed to the bleakness of DIS.

Dunno... undefined or middle of the road for me. Wouldn't rewatch it, apart from some non-sung parts.

I agree.

Capitalism is the reason all these things we love were created. Roddenberry was looking to make money. All the people working on these shows are doing it to make money.
Communist/socialist countries didn’t produce any awesome shows/movies/musical theater enjoyed for decades. Capitalism produced the prosperity that gave us the leisure time and money to spur demand for a thriving entertainment industry.

Just sayin’. Done now. Not looking for an argument but I can’t resist low hanging fruit like “Capitalism sucks”. I’m weak like that, which is why I stay off political sites.

Artists make art. Workers create the prosperity you experience. Capitalists take that art and labor, and they commodify it, extracting all the "value" they can before tossing it aside and moving on. It's like saying landlords create housing, when that is not only blatantly false, but lacking entirely in understanding the underlying systemic inequality and exploitation that got us into the situation we're now in. At the end of the day, you've mistaken commerce for capitalism.

Yeah, I agree, though, that it's best for another thread.

the situation we're now in

You mean the strike, specifically? I don’t know enough about the particulars to discuss it, anyway. I always presumed all these people get handsomely compensated, considering how much money gets thrown around in production.

Capitalism is the reason why people are striking.

Most of the money goes into the pockets of the executives.

The strikes are happening for a righteous cause. So while having an extended break sucks, I’ll live.

But the potential for a 2+ year break certainly make me think season 3 will be this shows last.

Yeah, 10 episodes is too damn short for this.

yeah, far too few. Feels like somewhere between 15-18 eps per season is the sweet spot. Not as short as it is now but not as long as “classic” Trek’s 26 per year.
