On an entirely separate note, is there some particular reason why the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps don't seem to have their own ships? Why are diplomats always begging rides from Starfleet ships?
There is no Starfleet Diplomatic Corps, it's Federation Diplomatic Corps.

Anyway, it's an age of sail thing where dignitaries traveled the seas in ships of their nation's navy, which Trek has adopted into a common practice in Starfleet because Story.

" a lie of omission is still a lie." - Picard

I would disagree.

I'm a literalist. If Riker had asked Data "Did you fire?" and Data said no, then that would be a lie. But all Data actually said was "Perhaps something occurred during transport." This is not a lie. In fact from a certain POV, it's true! Something DID occur during transport!!

Not that it matters in the end. Riker probably knew in his deepest heart and mind that Data did fire, but (since Fajo clearly deserved it) wasn't particularly inclined to dig any deeper. I'm cool with that.

The point is: Since he was right to shoot Fajo, why conceal that from Riker?
Logically speaking? There are lots of reasons, but that would require Data willingly engaging in subterfuge. We know he can lie, and has lied in the past like in "Clues" when commanded by Picard to do so. There is precedence.

Me, I think he did, and I think he chose not to tell Riker because telling someone up the chain of command would only cause more trouble than it would resolve any issues. Why introduce a new variable when the situation itself has been resolved?

So about that Cloak of War episode….

I still haven’t voted because I don’t know how to put a number on what I think about it.
There should be an “It’s complicated” option.
If I were to rate it I'd put a 9. It did what it set out to do. Yes, my opinions on the choices are complicated. I've never been in such a situation nor do I expect to.

No, I don't like the Klingon defector. If he was sincere it did not come across..I don't expect consequences for M'Benga because I doubt there is sufficient evidence. He will have to square himself.

Dak'Rah was not sincere. Not even close. He was a smarmy douche who was just trying to cover up the fact that he was a coward who ran away from a battle.

Let me just say that again: Rah escaped. He ran away. A real Klingon would stay and fight to the bitter end. The mere fact that Rah got away from J'Gal at all means he wasn't a true Klingon. I suspect that if his overall war record was examined in more detail, it would be found full of lies as well.

I don't actually vote on any of the episodes or rate them in posts. I just like yakkin' about them with you guys.

Picard just seems like the best Captain when you view him through certain rose-colored 1990s glasses. He's not. Maybe Sir Patrick Stewart is the best actor of all the Trek leads but thespian skills don't always the best lead make.
SirPatStew does an incredible job of smoothing over Picard's rough spots. While genuinely a good man, Picard has a tendency to talk down to too many people. Yes, he's a Renaissance man, and he's a man of his word, who has courage, there are lots of great things about Picard, but sometimes he would be far too inflexible when really his crew needed him to bend. Sometimes he would, but it often only happened after the shit had already hit the fan.
