Not sure about today but just within a few years ago, The US/Canada border between Stanstead Quebec, and Derbyline Vermont was separated literally by a sidewalk and a row of potted plants. No joke.

Sometime between when the NYT 2018 picture and Sept 2024 they added some pedestals to put the potted plants on.

Google maps street view looking up Church Street from Derby Line, VT to Stanstead, Quebec.

That was a discussed and presumed solution, but never stated on screen. If it was, the discussion wouldn't have happened, because it would have had an easy answer.
???
La'an and Kirk literally talk about bribing the border guard in the first scene set in Vermont. Indeed, you even said you "rolled your eyes" over that line back in July 2023:
I rolled my eyes at that one, too, but at least they attempted to explain it. Should have made it a running gag, then, and a joke about how easily swayed we are by money, or something.

Well then I 1000% have misremembered. Thank you for the correction. Total "mandela effect" moment for me mentally right now - i remember being dumbfounded that they got across the border easily but must have completely forgotten the details. Wow. Seriously, thank you for pointing that out. Both are unrealistic (i live an hour from the niagara border and know how hard it is) but I completely jumbled which way it went. Funny what the mind is capable of assuming over the span of a couple years. :O lol.

I know that we as the audience are not supposed to think about it, but how the hell did Kirk and La'an cross the border and cleared customs when they went to see Pelia in Vermont?
If you’re looking for a serious real world answer (not that one is remotely necessary), I can assure you that if I were so inclined, I could cross the border each way without going through official stations without too much trouble almost anywhere between St-Armand and East Hereford, QC, which would take me to northern Vermont. (My dissertation is heavily focused on that stretch of border during the Prohibition era and I have visited just about the entire stretch of that border in the past 50 years). It’s not as easy as it used to be but it’s still not that difficult.

I think what makes it a bit a stretch for me as they had to pull it off both ways. Was it said they bribed the guards both ways? Coming in and out.? It's not a biggie though. Personally, though with all the fish out of water stuff they did, this would warrant seeing the scenes. Even if it was whimsical. Minor nitpick though and I didn't realize it was mentioned in the dialog (bribing the border guards at least one way) until it was pointed out here. Missed that on my viewing

Considering that Sera was a deep cover Romulan agent trailing La'an and alt-Kirk, knew they were from the future, and knew that their capture and interrogation would muck everything up, I wouldn't be surprised if she secretly aided the ease with which they bribed border guards or however they crossed borders. Sera's been on Earth for over 30 years and likely had all sorts of hidden power at play at her disposal.

No need to overthink it. It’s just a very minor element of the overall story. I would have left out any reference to the border entirely.
Her Romulan tricoder, if it's batteries had not run dry, would have gone "Ping!" when it noticed them beaming in from the future.

Would Sera have been happier if she had found the wrong Romulans, instead of Kirk?

On a rewatch, my mind actually changed on this episode. I liked it better the second time around, mainly because it set up La'Ann's arc for the season, and it wasn't just about being romantically involved with Kirk. It was about her finally breaking out of her shell and not being ashamed of her name. If I were to regrade this episode, it probably would have gotten an 8, not a 6.

On my recent rewatch I thought "Huh. I remember the end of this being far more of a gut punch than this. This isn't so bad."

Then La'an broke down after Time Travel Lady left. OMG. There it is. I wept. I swear that ending is carried entirely by Christina Chong. I love this episode.

this was one of the best episodes in season 2

if you think about it this was actually the 1st time james tiberius kirk time traveled to the past then the 2nd time was in star trek 4 when the crew traveled to the past even thought in this one in strange new world when lana saved the future it was only kirk who forgot everything about his adventures with lana

I mean...it was an alternate reality Kirk and he died. Hard to remember things when it was your alternate reality self.

Kirk traveled to the past at least four times: "City on the Edge of Forever", "Tomorrow is Yesterday", "Assignment Earth" and "All Our Yesterdays". Five if you count "Yesteryear". Also three days in the past in "The Naked Time" All before Star Trek 4.

Lucsly: "Seventeen separate temporal violations; the biggest file on record."

Dulmer: "The man was a menace."
