The problem with this thing is that unless they're going to ignore TOS Arena entirely, there's not going to be a payoff. The Fed's not going to go to war with the Gorn because it's not in TOS. Unless La'an beams down to the Gorn homeworld herself, unauthorized by the Federation, and slaughters the Gorn council in the style of Vader on Mustafar or something.
Everything they've done with the Gorn has done nothing but HELP clear up the numerous ridiculous inconsistencies IN TOS -
Arena.
In Arena AT THE START OF THE EPISODE:
- The Gorn have enough detailed info to convincingly fake messages from Starfleet bases and personnel.
- The Gorn fake a message getting the 1701 to come to Cestus III and fully fake the personality of Starfleet Commodore Travers SECONDS before Kirk and Co. beam down to find the base destroyed. The impersonation was so well done, Kirk, Spock and McCoy had zero inkling anything was up.
^^^
How did the Gorn manage to get such detailed info; and also why are the Gorn so bloodthirsty? I ask that because if they have all that info and understanding of the Federation and Starfleet to that degree; they would know they could accomplish the removal of the Federation base diplomatically.
Even when first watching
Arena always thought McCoy lamenting that "The Federation could be in the wrong.." was bullshit GIVEN the totality of the Gorns actions against the Federation base on Cestus III (which had women and children) - as well as the fact that they lured a main line Federation starship with the specific intention of testing the Federations military/tactical readiness. Spock even asks: "I wonder why he's so insistent our tactical aides beam down..."
So yeah, I've never understood why some fans thought the Gorn were just these innocent mainly pacifist Saurians who only came to battle when their space was invaded? The totality of the Gorn actions in
Arena have never supported that conclusion.
And yes, if anything SNW is showing how the Gorn obtained such detailed info on Starfleet and the Federation and even why the Gorn did what they did the way they did in
Arena. The only question remaining is: Why aren't 'The Gorn' more widely known among Starfleet personnel?
But really, is that any worse than what happened with
The Borg in the TNG era? <--- And I say that because with all the info we know know the Federation had on the Borg before Picard first encountered them in TNG S2
Q-Who (Hell, Guinan's people had known about them for over a century and El Alurians are serving aboard Federation starships, but the Fed's have NOTHING on the Borg until Picard and Co. get thrown into them by Q?
