man i gotta say this series continues to be awesome, certainly the best star trek series or works(tv/movies) I have seen in a long time... also certainly didnt see the twist with hemmer coming.

So how do we outgross this episode? Maybe have La'an in a future episode put ceti eels into the Gorn hearing organs while forcing them to eat the scorpion aliens from TNG Conspiracy.

What are we calling Spock/Chapel these days? Chock? "Steer clear of this week's episode, it's full of chock".

Bring back the conspiracy aliens.

Ceti eels can burn in hell.

You missed a terrific chance to call it Spackel.

I think it was a pretty solid episode, but, I have to say I found killing Hemmer off to be completely unnecessary. Some sloppy writing at the end where La'an decides to reveal what happens if the Gorn spit venom at you, resulting in Hemmer taking his own life. This was done for pure shock value and nothing more.

I know it was more cinematic but fuck if I'm ever a host to Gorn eggs set the phaser to vapourize instead of me jumping off a cliff in a frozen wasteland.
Probably something to do with it being just like Andoria

Well. That's shocking...

;)

More shocking is the positive response to this episode.

Hemmer's death was the lowpoint of the episode for me, mostly because it didn't yet need to happen. I can handle Gorn hatchling spitting reproductive mucus. Hemmer leaving the show just 9 episodes in(and he wasn't even in all nine)? Not so much.

Have Pike served chilled monkey brains and snake surprise for breakfast. Yes. Breakfast.

It deserves a 10 from me. This series is turning into something really special. Love all the character. Hemmer's death was tragic, heartbreaking, and extremely heroic. This was a great episode for Uhura as well. I'll miss the dynamic between Uhura and Hemmer, but it is clear her time with him has given her a clarity she'll carry with her for the rest of her life. The Gorn were terrifying this episode. Overall, this episode was a real gem.

I wonder if the actor who played Hemmer wanted out... One of the few alien characters with an interesting background which was never explored. It seems incredible the writers wanted him out...

I'm forced to wonder if there was some real world reason Bruce Horak was written out? (Hatred of sitting in the makeup chair? Personal reasons?)
Or that was the plan from the beginning and Horak knew it when he signed up. His status as a reoccurring makes more sense know.
The Sombra Class seems to be a Constitution Class Variant using the same parts.
They literally said it was.

Losing Hemmer is really disappointing though, would have liked to have seen the character developed a lot more.
His twin brother Annvil will show up,

IMHO Kurtzman's role in most of modern Trek isn't that much more than Rick Berman during his era, so it's really stupid to blame anything you don't like on him.
I honestly don't know about Kurtman's role, but yes, you can definitely blame Berman for a lot of the bad stuff during his era. He really didn't know what he was doing. He kind of learned as time went on and was pushed in some cases. I say that as someone who enjoys much of his era. Although, notably, DS9 is my favorite and where he was much less involved.

Really, at this point, I'd say blur or go against canon (new timeline) for Spock/Chapel. (What's the portmanteau for that Spapel? Chock?) Because just feels intense between them and not it all on par with what goes on between them in TOS. This isn't a Spock who's going to throw her soup out his room door against the bulkhead.
Nah, they're playing this as a Prime timeline series. It's not a reboot in any shape or form. However, they're filling in gaps that seem new to us.

Also, yes, this is very much the Spock who'd throw soup at Chapel. Didn't you see him towards the end of the episode where she approaches him and he violently grabs her? That's the same primitive anger.
