Did I catch a glimpse of Peck playing the Sybok role?

I don't want that at all. That ups the cheese too much. I think I said earlier that it would be cool if Sybok wasn't aware of Angel's attempt to free him. I thought Sybok wasn't a terrible person, just seriously misguided. Maybe he "found God" while with the pirates. Maybe he found his own version of enlightenment while in the rehabilitation center and will convert all the pirates to followers when Angel inevitably liberates him. I'm looking forward to whatever exploration of the character comes our way. But I don't want another Data/Lore split screen deal.

Honestly, for all my crabbing it still has the strongest first season of any Trek since the original series (which really was great right up front). An average episode here and there is be expected in any series. Especially an episodic.

Still not sold on Peck's version of Spock (honestly I wish he'd talk a little less and not so rapid fire), but that's just my reaction to him right now. We'll see how his arc plays out. I agree, Combat Spock was amazing and even I shouted "all right Spock!"

This episode could have just had either fewer plots or a more consistent tone.

Spock and Sybok aren't that closely related. Peck playing a dual role would bother me and just give fans who don't have an issue with it more work to do here

Why are you a star trek fan exactly?
Mostly habit at this point, having been one longer than many of the folks who are criticizing me have, presumably, been alive. Occasionally, I am reminded of what Gandhi said about liking Christ more than Christians

I like how this show has very attractive looking actors and actresses. I'm reminded of something Jolene Blalock once said, it was something to the effect that sex appeal makes a good show better, but sex can not carry bad writing.

All the main characters in this show look good. I like looking at them. I'm glad I like looking at them, because it's a TV show and I'll be doing a lot of that.

There are also a lot of fans who have been alive longer than those folks criticizing you who agree with them. Me for instance. I would never let habit be the only thing that keeps me watching.

Funny, I was re-watching Amok Time last night , and for a moment I found myself thinking: Damn, the Enterprise looks really small and cramped!

I guess the new show is having an effect on my Trek-brain, like it or not. :vulcan:

Habit, perhaps, was the wrong way of putting it. Rather, let me say, investment of time and emotional interest in situations and characters, portrayed, etc. I can tell you that the phenomenon of fandom subgroups differing vociferously with each other is not new. What is new is the tying of said differences to those in society as a whole. It is one change that is not an improvement.

This episode was ok. I rather liked the pirate angle and Angel didn't look like no Angel to me or a counsellor. T"Pring looking up the Kinsey report to me, is silly. Why, I ask, is she so insecure that she needs a paint by numbers book to make love? I say make love not have sex. If Spock wanted that he could hire any number of escorts with a menu and choose what he liked. Some men spend their lives doing that.
T'Pring is insecure. So she goes out and figuratively buys a black negligee to 'spice up" their relationship. Is Spock bored with her and she senses it? It's not working between them. T'Pring wants control. She wants Spock permanently at her side, which is understandable, and thinks if she juices up her repertoire that will "do the trick" (Ha! ha!). She doesn't understand him.
Wondering if Spock sent Chapel a telepathic message when they touched. He has feelings for her. She doesn't judge him. She's beautiful. She has a secret little heart she reveals to few. I think now though, they need to put this to ....bed...so to speak and stop troping old Trek. We get it.
I do not reply to trolls so don't waste your time.
I don't recall T'Pring mentioning the Kinsey Report, but rather, literature on the subject. Tropic of Cancer, Fear of Flying, The Argonauts. I thought it was kind of sweet and motivated by their body switch and a genuine desire to understand him better. But that's my perspective based on what I saw. It's just speculation for me. You clearly have formed very firm opinions of who these characters are.

Exploring societies' differences has been a reoccurring theme in Star Trek. It's a spotlight they've always used to varying results.

Yeah, no Kinsey Report in the episode I saw either. Looks like someone is making up their own version to fit their premise.

I don't actually care as to why you like Trek. The point I was trying to make is that you would have perhaps learned to be tolerant of others differences instead of getting up in arms about refferring to someone by their chosen pronouns. Last time I checked Star Trek has had no room for bigotry since it's inception.

Leaving aside any issues with the Kinsey report (and I understand that there were many), it does seem likely that a Vulcan, investigating human sexuality, would be more inclined to go to scholarly works on the subject rather than literary ones. (Masters and Johnson, perhaps?)

Well, you did ask why I was a fan. You can't really object to my answering you.

As it stands right now: I like certain aspects of SNW better than TOS, but I still prefer TOS overall. I'd put SNW on roughly equal footing with TNG Seasons 3-6.

It's looking good.

I agree with your assessment. TOS, TNG 3-6 and the TOS movies are my true Trek loves, so SNW is in great company.

I don’t think SNW has reached the heights of TOS, but it’s off to a really solid start.

After the "Gorn episode" it had a lot to equal up to. Since then it's still been good just after that episode, wow. Next week's looks pretty "average" too. The benefit is with an episodic series a "bad" or "okay" episode doesn't damage things. A bad episodes in a serialized show can damage the entire series.

That's why I can't stand serialized trek. One or two bad eps spoil the whole thing. Though most of the eps on serialized trek stink.
