Another a thing I noticed, there seems to be 2 different types of tablets. There's the black bulky one based off TOS (which was also in DSC Season 2), but there's also smaller grey ones.

I love that La'an referred to the ship's food systems as synthesizers, as she should. There are no food replicators in 2259 even though the comical breakfast cereal ad attached to "The Trouble With Edward(SHO)" suggested otherwise.

Exactly. A younger actor would have been. Perfect. Maybe a 25 year old actor and a doctor just below the chief medical officer would have been more canon appropriate.
Hey we should appreciate how good we have it here on Trek because that other Star franchise is about to launch a prequel show starring a 40 something actor who's line in the original work is "I have been in this fight for 20 years since I was 6 years old!"

And despite that franchise's reputation for CGI deaging I doubt they're going to use it on him (they didn't use it on 60 something Temuera Morrison playing 40 something Boba Fett)

Also: have we forgotten the TAS Robert April and the SNW Robert April? And we're worried about the prequel M'Benga looking older than the TOS M'Benga?

And if those appropriate age candidates were not a good fit?

I don't consider TAS canon in some respects. It's a cartoon that was not considered canon until 10 or so years ago. So I can let that pass.

There are lots of age appropriate actors. So they would have I'm sure picked the right candidate.
Why? Age appropriate doesn't guarantee scheduling, availability, appropriate fit to the character or willingness to work with the production team. The number of factors in hiring an actor are way more than the simplified view of "he's the right age."

As much confidence as I have in the production team as I have I think they made the right choice for the fit for a character to fit in with the rest of the cast.

Leila's about two years into the future along with Roger Korby. Plenty of time before they need to show up or even be mentioned.

How is this anybody's deal breaker?
Because canon and visuals trump good storytelling and character development.

The idea I see presented with Star Trek is very much comfort food viewing. Well, as has been told to me repeatedly, you don't make any adjustments to comfort, no matter what. So, you don't change Star Trek.

Which is hilarious to me in a franchise that is all about the growth and development of humanity.

I'm a well-know visual continuity stickler. If I'm cool with M'Benga then there's no issue.

Okay, that was great. Maybe even my favorite of the series so far.

1. The original TOS music during Spock's dream- the bomb!

2. Interesting to see Pike working a diplomatic negotiation. I also loved the view of the Enterprise hanging in the background during the latter conference sequences. Gorgeous!

3. I thought the katra switch was a little dumb, but they made it work. Given that katras involve Vulcan mysticism, I didn't care for the way that it was resolved 'medically' in sick bay. Also, the Vulcans in TOS were much more tight-lipped about their customs, culture, and rituals. Here they just blab it all to outsiders with hardly a second thought.

4. The Enterprise bingo subplot was fun. I loved the difference in interrogation techniques between Number One and Singh. Chief Kyle terrorizes the ensigns? Always watch out for the little guy, I guess. Kyle on this show looks like he's in middle school.

5. At first, I thought- 'why was M'Benga fly-fishing with his daughter in the transporter buffer with a fatal disease?' Then I got to thinking, the whole reason she's there is because he's hoping to find a cure 'out there.' I guess he also has plenty of time when the ship is underway between missions to work on it. He needs an occasional break as well.

6. Chapel's character just isn't resonating with me. Am I the only one?

7. The solar sailing starship was kind of neat. It doesn't really jibe in terms of Trek tech (or SW tech, when we saw Dooku's in EP2), but it did give you that 'strange new worlds' sense of wonder.

8. This version of the Enterprise, its technology and fittings, is starting to grow on me. It is a nice upgrade to the 1960's concept.

Great ep. MOAR!

Is it the version originally aired? Are we talking syndication cuts? What is meant by "uncut"?
Would watching actually make the writer think, "On no! I can't do my Chapel/T'Pring scene!"
Of course it's the version originally aired. The 'cut' version is the one they take the reaction shots out of so they can inser more commercial time.
