Yeah, based on orbital views of Vulcan the number of bodies of water is extremely slim and who knows if the life forms in those are even edible.

T'Pring insisted that the differences were obvious and you could tell by Pike's expression he was like, "m'kay, if you say so." But as it progressed I saw subtle but notable differences in their behaviors. The way Spock held his/her hands in front of the body, wider-open eyes, vaguely panicked expression. Same with T'Pring as Spock, especially in the reaction to the Vulcan asshole saying, or you're the wierdo who's engaged to that half human abomination (paraphrasing:-) I thought they did an impressive job. They sure would have fooled some of us I guess.

Perhaps the issue is that we, as the audience, do not know Spock and T'Pring, well enough yet to really notice these differences. If this episode had happened later in the season or in season 2 or 3, it might have had a bigger impact. By then, the audience would be better acquainted with the nuances of the characters to notice.

Absolutely loved it.
As far as an ensemble episode goes, it does it well.
Would a 13 episode season have a little more space to breathe? For sure.

M'Benga had no real story this episode, he was just a supporting character. And that's fine.
The body swap was fun and entertaining and had no real drama.
The chess vulcan seems to be a good setup for Sybok

I was thinking along similar lines. The Vulcan playing chess reminded me of Sybok. Embraced emotions. Non-traditional Vulcan hairstyle. Basically Sybok if he hadn't become a religious zealot.

True, and it was avoidable. There was nothing to suggest Chapel and Uhura were part of Pike's Enterprise crew. So instead of putting them in as I suspect familiar characters that fans would relate with, and then turning those characters on their head, they could have introduced fresh characters with the same attributes and I think everyone would have accepted them. Literally nobody was crying out for a Uhura or Chapel reboot.

Yeah new characters would have been better or maybe some if the characters that were on The Cage enterprise. Chapel seems much more extroverted then how she is in TOS. Uhura is not so bad but she's serving in the Enterprise before Kirk is really strange. E'nbenga is too old. In 10 years I can't seem him looking the way he does inTOS.

Especially when you consider that M'Benga in TOS was played by 28 year old Booker Bradshaw.

Eh. I can live with it. 37-year-old Sean Connery's Bond in You Only Live Twice became 29-year-old George Lazenby's Bond in OHMSS just two years later both in the real world and in-universe. Besides if Bradshaw had facial hair he'd look more like the current prequel M'Benga.

Also everyone forgets that canonically Spock is supposed to not age and look exactly the same for the next few decades as established in TOS Deadly Years, only for Spock to age just like everyone else in the TOS movies spanning only 25 years (when Deadly Years clearly aged Spock and everyone else up by at least 40)

And I sort of hate to say it because I adore Leonard Nimoy but TOS Pilot Spock looked older and more wizened than Ethan Peck's prequel take on the character. Nimoy's unique look was of a man who appeared older and wiser than he was and even 24-year-old Spock in "The Cage(TOS)" looked and sounded nothing like a 24-year-old man.

Vulcan's lovebirds greetings...old & new

TOS - Oldies but goodies...

SNW - Everything old is new again...

Nice. And I misremembered the scene from TOS - I forgot it was Uhura who made the statement about T'Pring; and while watching this SNW episode; I thought it was Nurse Chapel who made the - "She's lovely..." comment.
^^^
So yeah, no canon violation at all in that Chapel was shocked at hearing the "My wife..." comment, as I'm sure she was wondering: "Hey they were engaged the last I knew...when did Spock marry her??!!...What exactly did I miss?" ;)

I really liked this one, definitely refreshing after such an intense episode last week. The "Amok TIme" music during the Spock vs. Spock fight was awesome, and the whole Spock and T'Pring come clean to Pike scene was hilarious. It was a relief for them to let him in on what happened rather than inexplicably keep him in the dark just for the sake of, well, hijinks.

I also really liked that Una and especially La'an got to loosen up a bit. The former has been so serious and a bit of a stick in the mud these first few episodes so it was nice to see her actually have some fun.

I loved that one of the Enterprise Bingo tasks was "Food replicator challenge: Durian fruit." Anyone who has been within the general vicinity of said fruit knows exactly why that was on the list.

My one quibble...the Enterprise is at Spacedock to undergo repairs following their encounter with the Gorn, and we are seeing the crew as they begin their shore leave....yet the Enterprise looks practically totally repaired and good as new. Would have been nice to see her still a bit damaged and progressively looking better as the episode went on.

But by the tos era The current actor will be more than 8 years older than Bradshaw. They should have gotten a younger actor.

I love that La'an referred to the ship's food systems as synthesizers, as she should. There are no food replicators in 2259 even though the comical breakfast cereal ad attached to "The Trouble With Edward(SHO)" suggested otherwise.
