Yeah. I have most of the movies and series at home anyway*, but customer convenience is definitely not their priority.

*: I have TMP, TWOK, TSFS, TUC, FC, INS, ST09 and STB, and all of TOS, TNG, DS9 and ENT, plus PIC S1 for now. I'll be getting S2 and LD at some point.

I'm way behind on TV physical media minus the new series.

I have all the DVD seasons ol TNG, the ENT Season 4, PIC Season 1, DSC 1, 2 and 3, and LDS S1.

You can be super careful with your DVDs or BluRays... But the real problem in ten years will be replacing the player when it breaks.

You can futureproof yourself by buying 10 brand new dvd players tomorrow, securing the boxes in shrink wrap, and then leaving them somewhere dry in your house until you or your grandchildren need them to watch your dvds over that next 9 decades ahead.

I think the fact that you can still purchase vinyl turntables indicates we'll have Blu-Ray players for a long while. But yeah, if it seems like they're about to vanish, I'll buy a few.

This is the first I've heard that Bluray players might be on the way out. Streaming may be convenient for a lot of people but if stores are any indication Blurays are going to be around for a long time to come.

I dunno. I'm not entirely convinced that the Illyrians from ENT...

... have similar-enough cranial ridges to the Illyrian kid seen in the Starfleet database image in SNW...

... to assume that they must be the same species.

They could be the same species. I think that's a valid interpretation. But I think the evidence is inconclusive and it's just as legitimate to interpret them as separate species with similar names.

Personally, I think the ENT Illyrians are a separate species with a similar name, and that the SNW Illyrians are a nation of Human Augments who emigrated from Earth some time between First Contact and the launch of the NX-01.

I speculate this for a couple of reasons:

1) It makes it easier to believe that Una could pass a genetic scan as Human if Illyrians are just modified Humans.

2) It's more interesting to me if Illyrians are Humans with a profoundly different culture than Humans in the UFP/U.E.

3) La'an calls Una an "Augment," which doesn't make any sense outside of the context of Human history with genetic engineering.

4) There is a potential inconsistency if the SNW Illyrians are aliens. We know from ENT S4 that Denobulans routinely use genetic engineering, yet there is no indication whatsoever that Earthers, Vulcans, Andorians, or Tellarites have any prejudices against Denobulans for that. So why would those same cultures have such a profound prejudice against Illyrians but not Denobulans? It makes more sense that there would be a sense of anger and betrayal and resentment if the Illyrians were Humans who rejected Earth's anti-genetic engineering values.

Edited to add: Admittedly the weakness in my interpretation that they're separate species is the presence of what looks like fictitious alien script on the okudagram, but I weigh the reasons I listed higher than that. End edit.

I mean, if SNW is using the Doctor Who-style season structure, what will probably happen is that semi-serialized recurring background elements/B-plots will come together and comprise the A-plot of the season finale. So for instance, Doctor Who season 2 had a bunch of episodic, standalone stories where a mysterious organization called "Torchwood" operated in the background until suddenly we saw Torchwood driving the A-plot of the last two episodes of the season. Whedon and co. used a similar structure on Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- for example, the Mayor is a recurring B-plot antagonist in a bunch of episodic stories at the start of S3, but he gradually takes over and then becomes the A-plot antagonist by the last two episodes of the season.

If SNW follows that pattern, then its episodes will stay episodic, but a recurring background element will take over in 1x09/1x10.
The consistency of Klingon and Romulan appearance, then.

It's not that bluray are on the out, it's that Bluray didn't kill DVD, which is a massive and unacceptable cut into their take.

The survival of DVD is also why Bluray is still a thing, since the tech has been there to make an optical disk that can hold 10 terabytes since 2018... Why are people going to junk their bluray player and bluray disk collection if there's still 40 million film snobs across the world still collecting everything on dvd?

Physical media isn't going anywhere, just the perception that is isn't on the way out.

Try buying even a (working) secondhand video player without a time machine.
Yeah but that's a bit different. Tapes have zero perceived advantage over other format now that we have better ways to record and copy. Once 4K becomes overwhelmingly popular, DVD and BD might start to falter. For now, they're easy to find.

Also, relying on streaming means being dependant upon that service being available. If for some reason it ceases to be, at least in your area, you have no way to watch it.

The secret to Una's "seemingly" super strength: The ability to turn Hemmer into a fluffy plush doll...

Hey it worked for Superman vs General Zod in Superman II.
And at least in this instance it still wasn't as obvious as it was in Superman II either. ;)

The children obsessed with streaming, leading our way into the future haven't suffered through some catastrophic event, where they can't pay their streaming bill, or their Internet bill or their power bill.

When your internet is down and the provider ain't coming for 2-3 days, it's nice to have a library of physical media and a player to go back and watch some of your old faves. This ability is not to be underrated or taken for granted.

Plus, when you 'buy' something on a streaming service? Do you actually own it? What if the streaming service goes away, or the internet crashes, or whatever? The truth is, that form of ownership is dependent on the whims of others. If you have the Blu-ray or DVD sitting on a shelf, you own that mofo.

Seconded. We just went almost a week without our internet provider. I dug out the old DVD machine in the man cave and watched Trek & MCU movies for a few evenings.
