Did the writers forget that Darem's human appearance is just a disguise? Maybe I missed something. But why do all of his people look like humans on their own planet? And why is their homeland seemingly a desert? I thought he was a "fish boy?" Did I miss something?
He said the moon was where they got married. Jay-Den pointed out that there was no water and Daram said there used to be. His people for lack of a better description seem to be werefish. So in water they are the fish form and on line the human form. So the moon is just old tradtional place to get hitched

So i rarely post but I’ve been watching ye-olde-Star-Trek since its origin.
This one was low stakes, low impact, and had two “B” plots competing with each other.
I’m enjoying SFA - far exceeded expectations in many episodes - but this was the worst I’ve seen in a long long time. And that includes Picard S2.
For goodness sakes, bring back T’Pau and have A REAL ALIEN CEREMONY. Etc.

This was not in any way a terrible episode. Sure it was slow and certainly didn't the amazing peaks of the last three episodes but at worst it was fine. It was also low stakes. Which I would think would be appreciated considering all of the complaints over the last decade about everything being high stakes

I didn't hate it. But I found myself just checking out several times during this episode.

There was just nothing really grabbing my attention. All these major plot points, twists and revelations just sorta' come out of the blue, and then get immediately resolved, and everything is back to square one.

There were a few nice character moments in between. But they also made me realize I basically barely know these characters nor do I care if they stay in the Academy.

Also kind of annoying how like half the cast is alien princess & princesses.

The mop was literally off a supermarket hook.

And forget Star Trek, the PADD looked less advanced than a tablet today. And sending a voice note on my phone? Hold one button down, release to send. Or alternately, slide, release and then tap to send. Yet the same thing takes many more button presses in 1000 years' time:lol:

Yeah. They've really dropped the ball on tech for this show. They're still using 21st century suitcases. In STD they stored equipment on their personal transporter buffers.

Actually - I think the show forcefully keeping the characters at the academy is a big mistake.
I think some would honestly do better outside of it.

Like Caleb travelling the galaxy to find his mother. That price ruling his planet. The hologram going on a hippie trail to learn about life and humanity. These characters need to leave the school to start their character arcs. They're just the wrong type of characters for this type of show, they and their storylines are trapped in the current location.

I also find it very irritating how the show insists that Darem is a bully - when in the very first episode he was willing to sacrifice himself for everybody, then learned to leave the command to the girl, and now received a whole speech about how he always puts others before himself.
At best the guys a bit fool-mouthed. But he's way less of an asshole than, say, Caleb.

I got into an argument with a guy about the premise. Basically, for me, the show is about teen drama at an academy.

Nothing wrong with that not being their jam but a huge number of complaints seem to be with the cast being a bunch of angsty youngsters and not seasoned professionals.

Here's the thing: I think that is a great premise. It worked fantastic with Harry Potter in the fantasy realm. It got the same potential in sci-fi.
In fact I think the episodes where they are just students were actually the best ones.

What didn't work is the backstory the writers gave to their characters.

Caleb's mother is out there somewhere. So should he, collecting clues in other systems. They could have made it more a "spy plot", where Caleb suspects one of the teachers know where his mother is & he wants to investigate. Then he would have a natural plot reason to stay at the Academy.

What I liked is the revelation that Genesis isn’t quite as perfect as she seemed at first. I’m not super clear on what those letters she tried to erase actually said, though. Something vague about her “not trusting that she belongs where she is”. So didn’t they basically say “she’s more able than even she herself realizes”? What is so terrible about this that she would need to erase it? However, I really liked the moment where Caleb holds her hand in support and I appreciated when Ake says: “Here is the lesson: We are all wildly flawed. And we have to learn to carry that.”
I interpreted the whole thing as simply imposter syndrome, which is very common in such situations

Oh I just realized they're basically the sea people from the animated film Luca :D
