Exactly this. They've been in class for 3-4 months, and even moreso that that, the curriculum seems to be based on learning mostly about mass debating, keeping blue raspberry mucus and talking plants alive, ancient mythology, and unsolved mysteries. They get several rotations of field training in their second and further years.
As much as that "makes sense" this ain't that type of show. The cadets are gonna be out in the thick of it like Harry Potter fighting Death Eaters

Except they're not "in the thick of it" for the most part. Mostly they're debating, playing pranks, getting angsty, gaming, etc. That might be more realistic but lessens the show for some.

Fair point about Preston

What about the USS Valiant and the USS Prodigy?

What would be the point of restricting training to a solar system?
The USS Valiant happened so Red Squad couldn't be called in to testify against Admiral Layton.

And the USS Prodigy involved the crew being granted full field commissions as Ensigns.

I'm pointing out that by the 24th century the only cadet training ship that didn't involve illegal activity was stayed in the Sol system.
Yeah, the Republic. Is it said why it stayed in the Sol System or if it was the only training ship in service?
All we know is it's an old ship. And that Collins thinks she hasn't left the system in fifty years.

Still, that doesn't mean training ships don't leave the Sol System. In fact Leyton would be pretty stupid to create an extra-Solar mission for the cadets if such things weren't the norm. Good way to attract attention,

I love the fact that we’re all experts on how a space academy in the year 3,190 should realistically work.
I mean... The episode kind of proves the point for us...

If they had used a holodeck copy of the Miyazaki instead of the actual ship they wouldn't have 1 cadet dead, 1 cadet comatose and possibly brain damaged, 1 cadet falling apart, and an entire years worth of cadets traumatized.

All for what? The satisfaction of using an actual ship instead of identical hologram?

He had already functionally taken over Starfleet at that point, he very obviously didn't care.

I don’t see it that way.

It’s like someone from the 1,000’s watching Grey’s Anatomy and complaining “Why aren’t they learning about the four humors? And where are the leeches?!”

This ain't that kind of show. In fact I don't think any show is that kind of show,

So far they have had an attack on the Athena the first day because of a cadet (caleb) breaking the rules gaining the attention of a dangerous alien Baraka and nearly getting the whole crew and the cadets killed. The cadet doesnt get expelled and now a deadly alien knows about the academy and where the two people he hates are.. They later take the cadets on a mission to an unsecured area and they get taken hostage from dangerous aliens. So what do the grown ups do? They ask Baraka for help. He doesnt help and a cadet is murdered and Baraka attacks both the Athena and another starship and murders several other starfleet officers. Ive never run an Academy but im pretty sure I wouldn't run it that way.
