Exactly this. They've been in class for 3-4 months, and even moreso that that, the curriculum seems to be based on learning mostly about mass debating, keeping blue raspberry mucus and talking plants alive, ancient mythology, and unsolved mysteries. They get several rotations of field training in their second and further years.
As much as that "makes sense" this ain't that type of show. The cadets are gonna be out in the thick of it like Harry Potter fighting Death Eaters

Except they're not "in the thick of it" for the most part. Mostly they're debating, playing pranks, getting angsty, gaming, etc. That might be more realistic but lessens the show for some.

Fair point about Preston

What about the USS Valiant and the USS Prodigy?

What would be the point of restricting training to a solar system?
The USS Valiant happened so Red Squad couldn't be called in to testify against Admiral Preston.

And the USS Prodigy involved the crew being granted full field commissions as Ensigns.

I keep seeing phrases like this, but I just don't see it.

If it's in reference to "The Bonding", that was NOT the point of the episode.
It's in reference to Piller's conversation with Gene who told him that people don't mourn and the Bonding getting a substantial rewrite.

So, you're saying training ships can be outside of the Sol System?
