I finished season 1 of my rewatch last night. I forgot how many obscure references to Voyager this series had. Watching Supernova and there was a Counterpoint reference. I forgot all about that and was shocked that we got it (and it made sense) in a kids show.

Also wanted to say that I kinda liked Admiral Janeway's new crew on the show - that Andorian Commander Tysess and Tellarite Doctor Noum were good characters IMO, especially for side characters. Like well written, well acted, memorable designs (although being CG most of the character designs in Prodigy are pretty memorable I think).

I liked the crew as well. That's one of the benefits of being an animated show. You can have more freedom to really have a diverse crew.

I was wondering something last night and if anyone watched this show with their kids more power to the response. Did Prodigy suffer a little from having a confusing storyline? I'm watching the first 4 (3, evidently Into the Breach was one episode on the blu rays, might have been on Netflix too) and I'm a little confused by this storyline, especially what happens to Gwyn. It's Solum of the future, Solum of the present, and them trying to erase Gwyn from history that is kind of making me try to understand what is going on. I'm assuming (I'm rewatching) that Wesley is actually trying to save Gwyn from erasure and was the person who sent the message? I just wonder if the whole arc got too convoluted for it's own good.

I was able to follow it pretty well until the very end, where I thought that preventing the Solum civil war should have erased Gwyn from time just as much as altering the Protostar launch. Like by the end it seemed to me they had fixed the initial problem but created a brand new one. Somehow alternate timelines apply to the civil war being changed but not to the Protostar launch? IDK.

Early on, Wesley isn't so much trying to save Gwyn as save all of reality, as he knows the paradox they created will release the Loom, who will eat the entire timeline up and erase everything to fix their mistake, and he wants to avert that, as he considers this timeline his 'home', being the one he came from. I think the other Travellers told him not to bother, but he insisted on helping because of that. Saving Gwyn was just a side-effect bonus as far as he was concerned IIRC.

Too convoluted is pretty much a given for any story involving time travel IMO. It's why it's so relatable when O'Brien says "I hate temporal mechanics" in DS9. That said I think Prodigy did better than most (YMMV), and I enjoyed it, with my only confusion/complaint being Gwyn being fine by the end (and future Asencia still existing even though her past self is now dead set against becoming her).

The thing is, changing a potential future shouldn't "erase" anyone who came from it, otherwise the "Yesterday's Enterprise" Tasha Yar and the slightly-near-future O'Brien from "Visionary" would have vanished once their timelines were prevented from coming to pass. It's like getting off a boat before it sinks. Once you're not in it anymore, you're safe from its destruction.

It was Supernova II when Janeway was in the brig and the person who released her was a Brenari refugee who Janeway saved. Janeway said it was nice to meet her, again.

Last Flight of the Protostar might be one of the best (Like top 10) treks in the modern era. Everything about both episodes was amazing, especially the animation, specifically of the eels. One thing Animation can do that live action has some limitations, they can give us menacing species like the Eels and the Loom (Even though the Loom do look like the sentinals from the Matrix). Still, episodes like that are why despite this being a kids show, I still think it's the best trek of the modern era.

I love it for how much more depth it added to Chakotey.

It did more depth for Chakotay in 40 minutes than Voyager did in 7 years. That's impressive.

Chakotay was actually interesting and the writing made you care about him.

That alone deserves 10 Hugos and 15 Nobel prizes.
