Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Episodes 3/4 and 7/8 could have easily been tightened into a single episode each, I would have preferred if episode 6 had been split into two, the Museum and Daystrom plots seemed crammed together.

There was a lot of overbloatedness to the season. Not a lot of economy in storytelling. If the goal was to end up where it did, there were other ways to get them quicker.

Not to mention how dark the show is. Even with my phone brightness all the way up I still missed details. Why does everything have to be color graded like GOT?

What exactly is amazing about Prelude to Axanar? The story is basically another pew pew Trek. The acting is fine but nothing we’ve never seen before. The CGI, while well done, is all rips from JJ Trek. The only thing that I think is unique from a Trek perspective is the format of the story, which truly is nothing unique in any other storytelling.

Im sorry but when people were fawning over Prelude and Alec Peters years ago, I just never got why it was considered fantastic.

The stunt casting is amazing.

Richard Hatch at his finest.

From the end of episode 1 to the end of 4 it just felt like they spent too much time at or near the nebula. That's 3 and parts of a fourth episode in one location.

I can believe season 3 had the lowest budget. Aside from the Enterprise D's bridge, they didn't build any new sets for that season, everything else we see in the third was built for either the first or second. Season 2 being the most expensive? It's possible. 90% of that season was location filming, which is actually significantly more expensive than studio shooting. Add into that new sets, like the Stargazer, Guinan's bar, new Starfleet uniforms, plus another batch of uniforms for the Confederation timeline, and, yeah, there would be quite a lot of money being spent there.

Season 2 also had several COVID related shutdowns that were not reported. I saw an interview with DeLancie where he said there had been full or partial shutdowns and that he was glad he wasn't footing the bill for all the expenses it was causing. They also had to change their filming start date several times so I'm sure that had an effect on the budget if people were being paid for a longer period of time.

oof what a waste especially considering how limited it's use was
They only had 2 days to shoot there.
The set was disassembled and placed in storage, so in any future show they can probably put it back together in a week or 2.

Possibly not, but don’t they use to do tours where fans can hang out on bridges? I do know the Titan/Ent G set was destroyed according to Dave Blass

You can't have the public visit an authentic recreation of the Enterprise D's bridge because the ramp is too steep for public health and safety to approve. It's why the recreation of the bridge featured at the Star Trek Experience in Vegas had to be built on one level.

Those are fan recreations not the original sets. Setting them up, maintaining them and keeping them moving is an added expense the studios neither want nor can afford right now.
The fan sets are also a lot more sturdy as they expect people to be walking around on them for hours. TV and film sets are a lot less sturdy unless they are built with the intention of being used as a main set of a weekly TV series.

IIRC a TNG Fan set group said that Paramount took a look at their set first, but it was unusable as a filming set for that reason.

@cal888

I'm putting on the first episode of 12 Monkeys. If I like it, I'll dive in and buy the rest of the season and then the rest of the series. Getting a chance to see what else Terry Matalas has brought to the table.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm 17 minutes into the episode. 12 Monkeys doesn't feel tonally out-of-place next to Picard Season 3, if you remove Star Trek from the equation. The character of James Cole is kind of like Jack Crusher. The rouge young guy who's a mystery, has lived the hard life, and I won't go into other spoilers for those who want to see for themselves.

I'll keep all the comparisons and observations Picard-relevant and as Spoiler-Free as possible. Except in cases like right below!

This series came out in the 2010s. They're talking about viruses and pandemics. If only they knew what was coming along in 2020...

20 minutes in, and yeah, I'll keep going with 12 Monkeys. If anyone's curious about watching the series, I recommend it from what I sampled. So, if you generally agree with me on things, check it out. If you usually don't agree with me, then avoid it like the plague. And if you only agree with me sometimes, then I guess it's a little like Russian Roulette and you'll have to see for yourselves. ;)

I'd try watching the first season on Hulu. You'll know if you're really hooked by episodes 7-9. Then buy the Blu ray so you have access to deleted scenes, commentary, and canon webisodes.

Also, avoid Googling anything about the characters or actors. Too high a risk of spoilers. Also avoid looking up stuff from PICARD seasons 2 and 3. There are some Easter eggs with the potential to provide massive spoilers.

Its a really great time travel show! And why I have so much trust re: Terry Matalas. Also there was a Lot of reference to 12 Monkeys in Picard S3.

I figured out what I'm going to do and how I'm going to do it. By the time I buy PIC Season 3 on Blu-Ray, I'll be all "caught up."

I'd try watching the first season on Hulu.
I'm sticking to Hulu for now. Turns out I already had an account with them, like almost 15 years ago. So, I resubscribed.

I had no idea 12 Monkeys was originally on SyFy. I stopped watching that channel in 2010 after Caprica, a spin-off from Battlestar Galactica, came and went.

Also there was a Lot of reference to 12 Monkeys in Picard S3.
I want to be able to get all of those. I feel like there's a whole dimension to PIC Season 3 (and Season 2) that I'm not even seeing.
