Shaw. continues to make a case for his own show. Great, unique, character that just forces “all eyes on” when he’s on the screen.

It'll be a travesty if they don't give Stashwick and Ryan their own show after this. (Preferably with the bridge crew intact)

More gold from Shaw this week:

"I'm just chipper."

"I'll just step out so the three of you can get your bullshit story straight"

He could've just beamed Picard, Riker and Jack over to the Intrepid, but he does the right thing and runs, knowing all of Starfleet will be after them.

My hope is Shaw gets his own show and gets the Enterprise-F :)

Do these ships not have phasers anymore? Seemed odd to start the attack with torpedoes

Maybe it's a TMP thing and the phasers are routed through the warp drive? Aka it's another TOS movie homage from Matalas.

Shaw shows an interesting measure of quality. Perhaps he belongs in the 24th century after all.

But it's the 25th century!

If Shaw were to lead a show, I'd want them to tone down the dickishness. There are reasons I could only tolerate House for a season before dropping it. Assholes need to grow for me to be interested. Or is that shrink? Close? You know what I mean.

Right, 25th.

Well, still he almost fits.

I like his dickishness. And if they make him the next Series main protagonist, I hope that he'll keep his dickishness intact.

To each their own, I suppose. I think it would get old pretty fast, and being an asshole is not something conducive to loyalty, so if his crew develops any affection for him, it would probably need them to be cynical assholes who emulate him or yes-men.

When I say toned-down, though, I mean he grows as a person, not that he is reset to a less dickish base. I'd also like to see an exploration as to how someone with his severe emotional imbalance and PTSD got to where he is. Maybe we can truly unravel the evil admiral trope.

Huh. Maybe Shaw was put in charge by changeling infiltrators to have Starfleet captains be as unstable as possible...

Either way, I'd much prefer he be a supporting character than the lead. I understand people like him, but he hasn't really impressed me as a character I want to see stories revolving around beyond as part of an ensemble.

"severe emotional imbalance and ptsd"? I have news for you, there are plenty of people with ptsd who are in positions of power. While he definitely seems to have ptsd - I don't see him as severely emotionally imbalanced - he is angry and a dick, so what? Is every person who shows anger severely emotionally imbalanced?

Same as my point about the Devron system events that literally never happened. There's no reason for a random Captain to know these things... unless he was hate-reading up on Picard the same way some Trek fans continue to hate-watch their least favorite shows :D

It actually makes sense for starfleet captains or senior officers to have read reports on all Q encounters.

The thing that makes Shaw's dickishness work, IMO, is that it's funny. He reminds me in that way of Dr. McKay from Stargate.

But that's probably also why he couldn't lead a series as-is. Either they'd need to add nuance to his abrasiveness, thus ruining the joke, or he'd need to be a secondary character in whatever show he's part of.

Shaw would have to get the Better Call Saul treatment. I don't mean a prequel about him, but I mean where we see the man underneath the exterior.

Vadic's assessment of him, presumably based on intelligence on Starfleet records, implied his mental situation was unstable.

Some quick drive by thoughts:

SO good to see Ro return in a very affecting way. Smart not to go for the low hanging fruit and make her a changeling.

I think people like Shaw because we don’t often see characters like him in Trek. I see a lot of people calling for a Titan show with him. I’d be down but I kind of think he needs to be a little contrite to Seven, Picard, and Riker because they’ve been right about everything, except maybe their methods.
