Did anyone else catch the SUPER deep cut joke about "going back in time and assassinating Kennedy"? That was a HUGE reference to Gene Roddenberry's pitch for Star Trek II. In his pitch, shortly after TMP the Klingons use the Guardian of Forever to prevent Kennedy's assassination, which like with Edith Keeler, results in the world ending and the Federation never forming for...reasons? Anywho, the crew of the refit Enterprise follow the Klingons back to prevent any changes in the timeline, and Spock ends up being the guy who shot Kennedy. I'm sure the studio looked at him after that pitch and said, "...naw, we're gonna probably not gonna do that." BUT STILL, the fact that this movie pitch is referenced 40 years later is actually insanely cool, and shows just how big of fans the writers are. :)

A 7.

Liked it when Tendi took control of the Holodeck story. The Boimler/Mariner bit was meh until the obligatory ending reveal. I figured they were going to have William becoming a Section 31 operative.

And yeah, while I'm a HUGE TOS fan, not much of a George Takei/Sulu fan as he needs to get over his feud with William Shatner; so that whole cameo left me a bit cold and felt like they were just pandering to his ego - IE: Yet another chance to take a small swipe at Shatner/Kirk (IMO).

I thought it was a Red Dwarf reference. :)

This one was a solid episode. Not my favorite by any stretch, but Captain Tendi is just perfect, and I loved all of the film pastiches. It was certainly fun. As for the meaning of life and the meaninglessness of death, that really resonated with me.

The person who woke Boimler up threatened to put him down summarily, if he didn't toe the line pronto. I'd say we're supposed to get the vibe that Section 31 is evil, and by extension, he is.

They fancy themselves as putting the needs of the many before the needs of the few, even if it means doing things which in and of themselves would be considered evil.

Like, doing In The Pale Moonlight things as their goto tactic.

Another 9 this week.

It was a lot of fun, whilst also being a good character episode.
