Spoilers Star Trek:Discovery Uniforms Sneak Peak

If the red alert klaxons aren't kazoos. I'm not watching.

Ok maybe that's going a bit to far. I'm sure they could modify a kazoo sound so that it sounds basically the same but a bit more realistic/urgent.
There's always the Reed Alert:

Er, no, that's not what I meant.

Of course it will be Starfleet. It takes place on a Starfleet ship.

How do we know that the uniforms worn by Pike's crew were the only uniforms being used at the time? Or perhaps they were being phased out and they hadn't had a chance to get the new ones yet?

And yes, there's the possibility that the Discovery might be a Section 31 ship, but it kinda defeats the purpose of a clandestine organization when your ship has a big "31" written on the hull.

Or maybe, just maybe, those uniforms in "The Cage" are butt ugly, and someone could come up with nicer looking uniforms in 2017 that don't look like they came from a Goodwill store in 1960?

It's possible that they might pull a DS9/Voyager uniform switch on us. On DS9 (and Voyager), they all wore the "Class B" jumpsuits instead of the TNG uniform 99% of the time. So the Discovery would pay lip service to The Cage uniforms in flashbacks and whatnots, but the main uniform would be an "alternate" style used by their crew and other deep space vessels or whatever.

I could care less what uniform they wear. The Cage uniforms would be great. So would the Kelvin uniforms. Or even a transitional type made for the series. Or just have them all be civilian-dressed spies.

I think the uniforms from "The Cage"/"The Menagerie" should definitely appear in some capacity, even if the crew of the Discovery doesn't wear them.

Personally, I think something with plaid is way past due...

Did I miss something about espionage being a component of this series? I loathe Section 31 and their black tunic-ed mustache-twirling idiocy. How much I'd love it if Trek writers actually tried to figure out a way to make the better future realistic, rather than falling backward on easy, lazy, anachronistic stories.

I don't think they SHOULD appear- but I'd get a little fanboy kick out of seeing them in the background of a Starbase crowd scene of somesuch. Same goes for TOS Klingons.

Oh, I definitely think they should be the standard uniform for all the Starfleet personnel. :mallory:

I have a feeling they'll keep the basic 'look' of pants and a coloured shirt, although likely updated like the 2009 film.

It's iconic and it still works.

I really like the "The Cage" uniforms and hope they do use them, tie into continuity, after all they were still being used on the Enterprise in 2265. I could understand a few tweaks here and there, such as material, rank insignia, etc, but the basic look should be retained.

Yes, this is EXACTLY what they should do. Have some dude on a starbase wearing the Cage uniform as an in-joke/continuity porn/whatever, but NOT feel slavishly beholden to having the new crew look straight out of the '60's. Next thing we'll be complaining about is that the female lead doesn't have a beehive hairdo.

You'd think after the reboot films, people wouldn't be so scared of the '60s uniforms.

In their cheap '60s state, they'd be laughable. But keeping the same general look and colour scheme while also modernizing it? I don't see a problem with that. They just need better, tighter material and a completely different collar for the men, then they'll be fine.

TOS went from this:

latest

to this:

Chekov,_Kirk,_Scott,_Bones,_Sulu,_Uhura.jpg

They went from pyjamas to, at the very least, much better looking pyjamas.

No reason they can't do the same with the The Cage uniforms. At the same time, I won't feel betrayed if they go with something completely different. It'd just feel strange for them to purposely remain in the Primeverse when they could've gone complete reboot if they're not going to stay somewhat faithful to the original uniforms.

They should go with the JJ look with uniforms amd ships, just without the lense flares.

Actually, I would love to see the FASA aesthetic for the new show. Constitution class saucers and nacelles attached to the funkiest secondary hulls known to man. In that regard, the Discovery fits right in ;)

I really wish people would quit throwing around terms like "cheap" and "low budget" in connection with TOS. It was one of the most expensive television shows of its time.

I do agree with the concept of doing an updated version of the "Cage" look, the way the KelvinVerse movies did with the regular TOS series uniforms as well as the ship and set designs. The general 1960s design mode of original Trek is the only Trek aesthetic that I like. In fact, one of the reasons I don't watch the spinoffs from TNG through ENT anymore is that I can't stand the way they look!
