Alternately, in true X-Files style, it simply was nothing but a common little diddly, just like Willa said. Perhaps brought to synchronized prominence by another bored-out-of-his-circuits Zora relative, just like Buster Keaton movies. Or then simply popular for the past five centuries, having spread before the Burn. Sometimes a coincidence is a coincidence, and that if anything is oooooominous...

(Basically, the whole planet here knew "Shave-and-a-haircut, two times!" long before Roger Rabbit put the lyrics to it, but those who could have suggested an origin would have been few and far in between indeed.)

In Discovery season 1 they stopped a war by holding a planet hostage with a bomb.

What's to say somebody couldn't hold the galaxy hostage with a Burn?

You seem to be forgetting that he had no way to actually know that since he didn't have any scanning devices on him at the time.

What is not explained though is why the dilithium on the planet wasn't rendered inert as well...

Because it's not being used in a warp drive is my guess. IIRC they established that only the dilithium on starships at warp was rendered inert. Which is why they went boom.

He didn't need a tricorder. Su'Kal's 'power' for want of a better term was clearly linked to his being stood on a planet made of dilithium - take him away from that planet and the danger becomes null and void.

It's like you don't need a tricorder to tell you someone won't be able to shoot you if you've just taken all the bullets out of his gun.

the dilithium doesn’t stay inert: it stops performing his function for a moment and warp drives explode, but those not actively used in warp drives are fine afterwards.

It was certainly an action packed episode and season but I want Discovery to have some bottle episodes where the fate of the universe isn’t at stake. I know, I know...it’s not necessarily the galaxy all the time...but every season so far has been about solving something BIG.

Like, can’t we just have some normal and low-key Trek episodes every once in a while?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Discovery. But I’d like for every season to not follow this same pattern of having a MAJOR problem that only Michael can solve.

Speaking of Michael...and again, I like her...can we have some episodes centered around the rest of the bridge crew?

you are after a different show - this is designed from the ground up to be a serial show which centres around Michael.

I posted this in another thread in the Future of Trek forum, but it works here as well. Just bear in mind it was in the context of a discussion in another thread.

    -- Cutting-and-pasting. --

DSC Season 3 had mostly episodic approach, with an overall arc in the background.
    • The first episode focused on Burnham/Book.
    • The second focused on the Discovery crew except for Burnham.
    • The third episode was story-driven not character-driven.
    • The fourth episode was focused on a new character, Adira.
    • The fifth focused on Nhan.
    • The sixth episode was story-driven.
    • The seventh episode focused on Burnham.
    • The eighth episode focused on Book.
    • The ninth and tenth episodes focused on Georgiou.
    • The eleventh through thirteenth episodes were mostly story-driven. But Saru and especially Stamets were put through a lot, emotionally.
    • Throughout the first half of the season, Detmer had her own character-driven story in the background.
    • Saru and Tilly both had several moments in episodes where they were getting used to their new positions.
    • We got to see Stamets/Culber and Adira grow into an unofficial family unit.
By my count, half the season's episodes were focused on exploring a specific character. And before some "STD Hater" says something, only two of those were Burnham. The rest delved into other characters. And I listed three other character-focused storylines that weren't a main focus but were there throughout large amounts of the season.

    -- End of cut-and-paste. --

Anyway, yeah. I agree that Strange New Worlds will be a better fit for what some people here want. It's coming.

I think so too. I think that Discovery will not ever satisfy the level of detail demanding at this point.

You know "Strange New Worlds" sounds like one of these old Sci. Fi. magazines, back in the days of Azimov, Poul Anderson, A. E Van Voght, and the likes.

Just watched the ep. A few things:

    - In her 32nd-century uniform, Reno's wearing the wrong rank. She's a full Commander yet only has a Lieutenant badge.

    - When Owo and the others wake up after almost asphyxiating, why aren't they gasping for breath? They look like they're getting up from a nap.

    - During their fight in the data core, what's that thing that Osyraa pushes Burnham into?

    - When Discovery's original operating system is restored, what happened to the programmable matter all over the ship? How can it work without the upgraded (i.e. 32nd-century Starfleet) OS?

A programmable matter computer processor storage wall? Kind of like the isolinear chip alcoves aboard 24th century Federation starships?

You know what? I am still wondering about that myself. Also, why is it that Osyrra thought that Michael was done with for good when she definitely was not?

I’d hire whomever did the Earths impenetrable defense screen to do one for the dilithium planet ASAP!

Decker was suffering from shock. If he’d lived, that would have been proven and Kirk would have been cleared.
