Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 2x04 - "An Obol for Charon"

I was really liking this episode until the stuff post Pike and Burnham in the Ready Room. It was like you had a 45 minute episode, but then they had to stuff all this stuff with Tilly and the Spore and the hallucination at the end and I think they should have ended the episode sooner. The stuff with the sphere was Burnham and Suru's relationship was really well done though, and this episode was a lot better then last week. It was a flowed story, the Camera was not annoying like last week and there was a lot to like that felt very Star Trek to it. I just wish the stuff with Tilly might have been saved for the beginning of Next week's episode.

This episode gets a 7 from me.

Also, Doug Jones man. What an actor that guy is. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take his Arc now.

I liked that scene too. Also, they are making Linus more than just the "guy in an elevator". I'm starting to really like him.

I gave it an 8 out of 10. A bit of an improvement over last weeks. So many great character moments. Saru and Burnham of course. But, also Tilly, Stamets and Jet. That team was great going "old school" in the engine room!

The mystery behind the creature, along with the notion of the creature itself were interesting. The resolution of the mystery was creative and unique as far as I know--a last contact rather than a first contact. Really, both in one. Also, using a virus as a means to communicate.

Now it seems like we're getting a series of random adventures as the Discovery chases Spock--last week, this week, and next week's episode.. I'm not sure about that. Not every story has to be connected but it's diluting the ongoing red angel storyline and the mystery around Spock. It's not all gelling together.

Well if the system was that vulnerable, I could see them scrapping it.

So, they explain why viewscreens replace holographic communications, and also why the spore drive can never be used again in one episode. It was pretty slow, all things considered, and borrowed a lot from The Inner Light. On to next week to continue the Search for Spock...

Well the drive appears to be used next week to save Tilly.

Great observation. I hadn't thought of that, but it's interesting. It could be a faction or even a small group of individuals...although my mind goes to the idea of an ancient, multi-species alliance--an ancient Federation, if you will--that seeded this generation of life. Fascinating.

"Ancient" might be overstating things. Amerind seems to have only been settled by Preserver transplantees sometime after the year 1500 C.E., when indigenous Native Americans started being in danger of extinction from European colonization.

I do think the crew were a bit stupid in this one. I knew from the start that it was just trying to communicate with them, but I suppose that’s only because I’ve seen similar Star Trek stories before.

I *think* he said "S.O." -- maybe for Spore Ops?

Or possibly Second Officer... I think she held that role under Lorca, but I would have thought Burnham would fill that role now?

I was wondering that too and turned on the subtitles. Pike said "If So" when he turned to Airiam, answering Joann.

Tonight's episode had a number of great elements, but the overall presentation was ... lacking. It seemed too disjointed to me. Too much going on.

I'm really hoping they focus more with the next episode.

Also--calling it now--next week we're going to see Culber. One way or another, Culber is going to be featured in the episode.

thought it was a step up from last week, but paced way too fast. not sure the saru/burnham arc is quite where the writers want it to be emotionally, but i appreciate that it’s good feelings they’re trying to convey rather than antagonism like a lot of season 1.

i like what they’re doing here, so i’m going with it.

That made water come out my eyes. I think "An Obal for Charon" is the first episode of Discovery that I can say I love unreservedly. A lot of very heartfelt moments tonight: Tilly and Stamets singing Space Oddity, Burnham and Saru, etc. If this were any other Star Trek show, I probably wouldn't have been fooled for a second into believing that they might actually kill off a major character like Saru. However, given how many people have bit the dust leading up to this point, I wouldn't have put it past them. Of course, what ultimately did happen instead was a possibility I was clinging to as well, but I found myself getting quite emotional thinking that this might very well be Doug Jones' swan song. I had to rewatch "The Brightest Star" after this, since vaharai now makes more sense in context.

I don't think I can point out any other aspects that I particularly liked that haven't already been mentioned. I love Tig as Jett; I'm glad she's still around. Also, the UT malfunction was fun; I've long thought Star Trek should have done something like that before. I seem to recall seeing a complaint from someone who assumed that, based on his appearance in "Brother," Linus wasn't going to get any actual lines; it was nice to see that proven incorrect.

Also, is it English or Federation standard? They’ve said both.

Shame they didn’t show any exterior shots of the Enterprise in spacedock. I want to see how the refit is going.
