Hey, back to another Star Trek episode. Maybe I'll just watch every other episode of this series!

We had a couple of additional map images this episode, right? One in the notebook of "Number One" and another on either Detmer or Owosekun's console...?

I could do for less going on per ep.

Sphere. Spock shuttle fleeing. Saru. Tilly n Mae. Mae n spores mystery.

Is this how we put an end to the spore drive btw?

Trying to imply it’s Scotty. It’s possible.
The Chief isn't Scotty, but that was a forward reference to him.
Man, I loved this episode. The stuff with the Orb was great, and I love it's intentions were peaceful and they let it share it's information.
I thought they were actually going to kill off Saru for a minute there. Doug Jones really a spectacular performance here, one of the best I've seen on a Trek show in a long time. It will be interesting to see what happens with him now. I just hope whatever happens when he returns to Kaminar that it isn't just a one episode story, it really this feels like something that will require at least a couple episodes.
Stamets, Tilly, and Reno were a lot of fun together, and based on what "May" said, it sounds like this might be the beginning of the end for the jump drive.

"Last Contact", I like that.
I really liked that spin on it. I think I've always preferred the finale message over the first contact in situations like this.

This was a great episode. I feel like I'm always saying that with Discovery and I mean it every time I do. This show has not at all disappointed me. The scenes between Saru and Michael were great and I'm glad this episode resulted in moving both stories forward and ended with both of them in stronger positions and with stronger resolves. I can't wait to see how this Tilly situation is addressed.

Next episode was the part of the trailers for season 2 I really wanted to see and see explained. Those scenes looked crazy and I'm glad it's next.

Also the universal translator scenes were great. Add me to the list that thought they were actually going to kill off Saru. The scene between him and Michael actually made me forget about the scenes in the trailer. I thought about them earlier in the episode but for those 10 minutes I completely forgot. Doug Jones and Sonequa Martin-Green got me with that scene.

I enjoyed it.

At first, I was worried that this would be a TNG-like problem of the week with a technobabble solution. So I was ecstatic with the focus on Saru and Burnham's relationship.

I also like the idea of "last contact" as opposed to first. It was nice that the episode slowed down a bit from the frantic pace it began with. Episodes last season either moved at a glacial pace or a frantic one. Here they've tried to find a nice balance. It's not quite there yet.

Not enough Number One. Glad Nahn is along for the ride— also she rocks that dress version of the Disco uniform.

Overall a much better episode than last week's.

Gave it a 9. It was 7-8ish until the last 15 minutes. After that magic in Saru's quarters, I would've given it a 10 if it weren't for my quibbles during the first half hour.

To all DISCO haters, I give you Doug Jones. His performance blew me out of the water. I was prepared to walk away from the show if Saru... I kept saying "this Trek hasn't earned it yet!" because something about it reminded me of losing other key characters from other series during much later seasons. My gut said they wouldn't Culber him, but after they Culbered Culber, I couldn't be sure.

And wow. What a twist!

Doug Jones is a gift and Saru and the Kelpiens are wonderful additions to Memory Alpha and the franchise. He'd better get his turn in the Captain's chair.

Other stuff: I hope the sphere is connected to the Red Angels, but somehow, I don't think so. Throughout the episode, I kept thinking "here are clues for the RAs being Iconians" but the dates don't line up (100K years old vs the destruction of Iconia 200K years ago).

Tig's Jett Reno also deserves special note. I hope she and Stamets are the frenemies of the ship. A little weary of the mycelial network stuff, but will sit through it so we can get Culber back. And unlike many, I don't mind Tilly. I wince because I love, and I love because I see so much of my (overeager, nerdy, annoying) younger self in her.

SMG seems to be starting to relax into the lead role. Love Michael best when she's most intuitive and human.

Loving seeing more of the bridge crew, but I still think they could do more with them. Keyla Detmer and Joann Owosekun are starting to stand out (although I'm confused about what Owo's role as ops officer is since this is the TOS period and I assumed she was the navigator). Not sure about the others... and by 2x04, this is stuff we should be picking up from the eps.

I wish they'd make each episode 60 minutes long since there are only 15 of them. This way, the storylines could breathe a bit more, and more character moments could be added.

I said, "Swear to God, if they kill of f Saru I am never watching this show again." I would have respected them for it. But great character and actor, yeah baby.

And yes , Burnham emoted more than that pained/concerned/earnest look with slightly teary eyes she always does.

Fascinating!

So much going on in this episode! I love the concept behind this episode, and have never seen Trek attempt this before. So I'll get to the good stuff and the not so good stuff (IMO, anyway):

GREAT STUFF
* Being ripped out of warp space. Loved that.
* The universal translator goes wonky and everyone starts speaking in multiple languages.
* Jett Reno and Stamets exchange.
* Tilly's grape gum
* "Space Oddity" is Tilly's favorite song. My heart swooned.
* Ancient species sending out a final message before dying, in order to pass on its knowledge so it will be remembered? Great concept!
* Saru and Burnham's relationship has reached such a closeness, I couldn't help but tear up when Saru thought he was dying. Burnham's "I love you" made my throat catch, and Doug Jones is nothing short of brilliant. Beautiful.
* Along those lines, Saru's revelation about what he thought was just a fact of life, and how he'll break this news to his people. The implications are enormous!

GOOD STUFF
* Number One is pretty cool. I'm curious to see what direction she'll go in over the course of the season.
* Saru's figuring out that the entity is trying to communicate rather than destroy them.
* Drilling a hole in Tilly's head and how the whole sequence was handled. Jett Reno better stay around.
* The trippy sequence between Jett and Paul when they were dosed by the organism.
* Stamets finding out that they're damaging the Mycelial network every time they jump. This is probably why it never catches on.

ALRIGHT STUFF
* The solution to communicating with "May." It felt a little too techno-babble-ish for me in a TNG way. A little is fine, but I hope it's not a continuing pattern.
* The ancient entity happening to record the destination of Spock's shuttle. Yeah, it had to happen in some way, but it felt a little shoehorned.

BLURGH STUFF
* "May" having plans for Tilly just came across as villainish and then kidnapping her is a touch hokey. This would be my only actual complaint, which doesn't say too much.

This episode gets a GENUINE 8 from me. I was on the fence about re-upping my subscription in a week or so, and now I'm thinking I will continue a while longer. Next week we get a Tilly episode, so there's no way in hell I'm missing that one. Still, this is a very solid episode, and it felt true to the science side of Star Trek, and I can only hope for more of that this season and going forward.
