Where are we? I was thinking about that the other day and I realized that we're in a whole new generation of Trek. They could have called the new show 'Star Trek: The Third Generation'. Let's put this in perspective. When TNG started, Trek had been off the air for18 years and when Discovery came along, Trek had been off the air for 12. Not quite as long but almost comparable. Doesn't feel like it does it. The TNG/DS9/VOY era is over and now we have a new Trek that's very much a product of modern television while still remaining Trek. Opinion among fans covers a wide spectrum. Many feel that the show has really picked up after a weak start and many just aren't feeling it. Then you have every kind of commentary in between, along with a lot of good debate. And it may not be "event television" for most, but it's doing well enough for CBS and Netflix to keep it going for the foreseeable future.

Where are we? We're about to begin the last stretch of season 1 with the USS Discovery finding itself in unfamiliar territory. Rumors abound about where they are, so let's see what actually comes to pass.

Where are we? Poor Captain Lorca and his crew are asking that very same question. They'll soon find out.

Alternate dimension or possible time travel. Forward or back?

For the record on the timeline, if you include the movies:
1) TOS = 1966-1969
--------
2) TAS = 1973-1974
------------
3) The Motion Picture = 1979
4) The Wrath of Kahn = 1982
5) The Search For Spock = 1984
6) The Voyage Home = 1986
7) TNG = 1987-1994
8) The Final Frontier = 1989
9) The Undiscovered Country = 1991
10) DS9 = 1993-1999
11) Generations = 1994
12) VOY = 1995-2001
13) First Contact = 1996
14) Insurrection = 1998
15) ENT = 2001-2005
16) Nemesis = 2002
------
17) Star Trek (reboot) = 2009
----------
18) Into Darkness = 2013
19) Beyond = 2016
20) DISC = 2017-current

Point being, only 4 instances of 3 full years with no Trek since TOS.

#1) 1970-72. TOS to TAS gap. 3 yrs.
#2) 1975-1978. TAS to TMP. 4 yrs.
#3) 2006-2008. ENT to Reboot. 3 yrs.
#4) 2010-2012. Reboot to Darkness. 3 yrs.

While it has been a while for TV Trek (11 years absent), the move to "new" Trek has been happening for a while.

DS9 started the more serialized approach with the war vs the Dominion. Enterprise carried it on with the Xindi. Discovery is the culmination.

The reboot movies signaled cannon is not safe. While I do mot think Discovery has violated cannon outside of the visuals for the most part (and they should do it there), the only Trek we have had since Entetprise has been doing it for 3 movies straight.

My theory is that they were already in the mirror universe an accidentally jumped into ours.

Watching it in Canada so spoilers follow (since it starts at 8 up here):

Great episode so far though none of the twists are different than what the majority have predicted so far. It is the mirror universe, Terran Empire and everything, and Ash is definitely Voq (though it hasn’t explicitly been said yet). And Tilly is indeed Captain in the mirror universe.
