In the theater right now. Looks like I missed out on getting a poster at the 7 pm showing. The 9:55 showing is about 10% full. The last two Thursday Star Trek showings were packed. A little disappointing .

Well back from the midnight screening, a definite improvement over STID and a much better use of all the characters much more of an ensamble film.

I just been to a midnight showing and there were only 6 of us in the 3D showing which I found a little sad

some quick comments

Yes this is the best of the 3 movies so far, which is not a massive surprise, the 1st one is bogged down in creating the new timeline, and the second one has received mixed reviews. The opening of this movie is great, the hints at the "episodic" TV series what has not been made with this crew, but also now so many "little" things pay off, every little thing, is set up for something later be it the weapon, set up for the plot, or Keenser having a cold it pays off later. That is just really good to watch.

As mentioned Karl Urban is amazing, Quinto and the entire cast is found its sweet sport really well, but Urban owns it. In some ways the humor in this movie reminds me of a Marvel movie.

One thing I find interesting, is they create this new timeline so they dont have to worry about previous Treks, and what does this movie do? well takes the MACOs from Enterprise, and makes them a massive plot points, whilst everyone on here, and nearly everyone in the audience on opening night will be fine with that, it is both good to see the movie reference what is left of the Prime timeline, but also kind makes you wonder why they did it.

Finally tip of my head, and wag of my finger.

Tip of my hat to the movie resisting the urge to blow up the Yorktown, the Yorktown is just superb, unlike another recent Sci-Fi sequel, thinking of the scale of it, just makes it more amazing, not make you wonder why anyone is still alive. Then Bones starts to point out how fragile it is, and how it should never be, and im like "oh no they are going to destroy it" so glad they didnt.

Wag of my finger, before I start dont get me wrong this is not "saved by the power of love" but "saved by the power of music", I was not keen on that, the techno-babble explained why it worked, but for a force that just ripped the Enterprise apart, to be stopped by music, it felt a little easy.

Quoting both posts to preserve full context.

I have one question and need a feedback about this movie:
In this movie is revealed, that Krall is the former captain of the NX-ship USS Franklin, which was in action something in 2155-2161. I do not know the exact time, something in between this, because it has to be after the Enterprise but before 2161, even when it is only capable of Warp 4. So no matter of new Kelvin-timeline or old known timeline, fact is, Krall was there before Nero created the new timeline in 2233 with destroying the USS Kelvin.
My question is know:
is Krall available in the old timeline? What would happen if Captain Picard would travel to this particular nebular? Would Krall be there and attack the Enterprise-D?
Yes, he would be there at least up until the incursion by the narada, what about 35 or so years before this film. but after that point who knows. So many changes could've occurred that a race might have developed in that area and destroyed them that didn't happen in this universe. After all we know thanks to the Narada that Starfleet was much more aggressively expanding and exploring, most likely due from such a massive and powerful threat, that had suddenly appeared and disappeared. Without that much earlier expansion person a different major player would have got there first and made short work out of them. Who knows?
What if this expansion caused them to reach the Delta quadrant over a century earlier, and
the Franklin got managed to get picked up by the Caretaker (perhaps in the same nebula, I don't know) and, well…
Is it too much to call it a stretch? I haven't gotten to this episode, yet (I'm still in S1.), but I can't deny the similarities between the plot of Voyager and Edison's situation. And if my theory that the planet was originally settled by the Founders holds any weight, they could have left behind some technology that allowed them to get home or something.

This was my prediction for the plot. You decide how close it was.

Had a dream last night that I saw Star Trek Beyond. The Enterprise was destroyed and Kirk and the crew were separated during some conflict. Then they started to disappear one by one from the action until it was revealed that they were secretly gathering together onboard the Enterprise-A which was a gaudy looking metallic ship. They then did battle with a large space complex and won. Overall, I remember the movie being pretty mundane.

Looks like I got it wrong. It wasn't mundane. It was an exciting adventure with heart and characters that I feel even closer to. It's been said but I'll say it again...
  • Loved Kirk's captain's log intro. What an excellent set-up.
  • What did rebooting Trek give us? Yorktown. Loved its lavishness and how it was presented.
  • I liked going in spoiler free and having Krall be a mystery. I too wondered why they put Idris Elba in so much make-up but it made sense in the end.
  • Jaylah was great. Well written and well performed. Boutella is a rising star.
  • Nimoy in a third movie? Worked out well.
What didn't I like?
  • Some of the camera work made the action hard to follow.
  • Krall was a good villain but his motives were weak.
  • Beastie Boys in Trek? Eh... I dunno. It was good and bad. It could date the movie.
  • Nice to see an Enterprise-A but I wish its design was more of a departure from the original.
I couldn't decide between and A- or an A. I think I'll go with A. Pegg & Co. put a lot into this, a lot of which is still sinking in, and I enjoyed the experience.

Reposting this from another part of the board:
What a fun movie! While I've liked the first two of the new movies, I've also understood and agreed with a lot of the complaints. Even while watching Trek 11 and 12 for the first times, I found myself questioning and rolling my eyes. This time, however, I enjoyed the ride through and through. Will I see some of the flaws with multiple viewings (and there will be multiple viewings!)? Probably, but I don't see them as being as major as those of its predecessors. So finally we have a Trek that is still entertaining without being nearly as flawed.

I loved the crew interactions, especially McCoy and Spock. And Sofia Boutella was fantastic! I'm not sure where I'd rank it amongst all of the movies, but it's definitely the best of the JJTreks.

I had been successful at avoiding the Krall spoiler all the way up until 5 hours before seeing the movie. I was watching something on my DVR, and as I was skipping through the commercials, it stopped on a Star Trek ad at literally the moment where they show Idris Elba sans make-up. Who the fuck thought that it was a good idea to reveal such an interesting and important plot point? I didn't keep it on the commercial, but the damage was done. It was pretty easy to figure out from the brief look that Krall was going to be a member of the Franklin's crew.

Tear up moments: Of course, the For Anton part, but I knew that was coming. What I didn't know about was seeing the picture with the old crew taken for Star Trek 6. Seeing those faces again warmed my heart to no end.

Definitely. The problems with the previous two were right there to be questioned the moment they happened. This one will maybe not hold up entirely to instense scrutiny, does a better job of making sense.

Star Trek 5. And agreed. I may have misted up just a tiny bit. :)

I enjoyed the movie alot. Far more than I was expecting when I saw the first and even second trailers. It had the spirit of TOS more than the other two movies. It definitely nailed the crew's camraderie better than STID did trying to simply say it to death til you believed it. Some points that I took home:

1. What they did with Old Spock was nice, but I kinda wish they'd simply let his fate go on unknown forever. That way he just lives on. No big deal.

2. The pic of the old Enterprise crew was cool too, but if i'm nitpicking, it emphasizes the fact that these characters don't look like the original crew when they were young. Again, no biggie.

3. This was the most action packed Trek yet. While it was tied to a leaner, more well-thought out storyline, I'm just kinda sick of all the damn action. It's too much sometimes.

4. Did they ever tell how Krall sucked the life force out of people? Or was it just some alien hocus pocus and left at that?

The pic is definitely from Star Trek V. I'd recognize that bridge anywhere.

By the way, where did Krall get his minions?

Also, I was waiting for the opening title card thinking wow, this is a long intro but one never came until well into the closing credits. Didn't like that. We should have had an opening title card.

Did anyone else get lots of merchandise when walking out? When I left, I was greeted by several theatre employees giving out posters, patches and metal Starfleet insignias. Never had this before. For Into Darkness, they gave out a poster but that was it.

That would have been good too. It was a bit sad to think that he didn't live as long as Sarek. Then again, he was half human.

2. The pic of the old Enterprise crew was cool too, but if i'm nitpicking, it emphasizes the fact that these characters don't look like the original crew when they were young.
Yeah, but I'll let it go. It was a nice touch and Shatner finally got an appearance. :p

Alien hocus pocus.

Grade = A.

This is the short version, more thoughts to come in the coming days, weeks, months, and years.

Basically a good solid adventure for the crew. It hung together very much like a TOS episode. That's been said elsewhere, but I think it's true. The depiction of all the TOS characters is pretty much flawless, and very TOS-ian. What was especially interesting to me on that score is how they managed to be their TOS-like selves even through all of the action sequences. I really got the vibe that we were seeing an honest re-imagining of the TOS crew, and substantially more so than what was done in either of the other two nufilms.

Jaylah was an outstanding guest character, and I hope we see more of her in the future. Her action sequences were well done, and I think noteworthy because of their believability. Boutella really sells everything Jaylah does. There's much more to Jaylah than an action character.

I welled up at the picture that nuSpock found in Ambassador Spock's effects. I was happy to see two dedications in the end credits, to Leonard Nimoy and Anton.

This is the most visually beautiful of the nufilms by a significant margin.

Even though it's not dwelled upon more like it probably would have been, had it been in TOS, the reveal of Krall's motivation to do what he did conveyed emotional content. What I'm saying is that, while it ain't 2001, this was anything but a mindless action film.

I hope it does well.

P.S. I didn't call it, but I can't say I'm remotely surprised about the Ent-A coming out at the end. Loved that! :techman:

I wish they would have used a picture from TMP, instead of STV, because it had the full crew (a bit disappointed that there was no dedication to GLW). They could have even photoshopped Arex and M'Ress in Decker's and Ilia's places.

Such as this one:
