That's what I assumed about Spiner's Soongs.OF course he could be called Soong because of people changing their name in marriage, and have either very little or zero of the ethnicity it implies.

Greetings, Ms. Teacake. I'm present and ready to be spoiled now.
P.S. Indranee, right.![]()
This Khan will have very different motivations to the scenery-chewing, giant-chested revenge nut from "Wrath of Khan". My guess is that he'll have been with the Klingons for the past 25 years. There will be no Genesis device or Carol Marcus. The Khan/Kirk fight won't be personal about a dead wife and long exile, it'll simply be Augment genius vs. our genius level repeat offender with the fate of the galaxy at stake.
And it's gonna be FUN.
This is the same continuity. It's just a different timeline from 2233 onward. Barring some twist, the Khan here should be the same one played by Ricardo Montalban.Says who? We've had remakes of other movies and television series where major character have changed ethnicity and gender. If this was recasting a character in the same continuity I might agree but the rule book is out the window with remakes, re-imagining concerned. The cast don't have to be the same ethnic backgrounds as their characters but they should at least look it.
Kirk and McCoy are meant to be white Americans, Scotty white Scottish, Uhura black African etc.

What makes you think he'd have been with the Klingons? And why would he be wearing the Starfleet uniform and sideburns then?

Regardless of what "Khan" it turns out to be, if any, I've gotta say always been perplexed by this fascination some fans have for the character. When I watched the show as a kid Khan never stood out any more than Kor or Kang or many other guest baddies. In fact, I don't recall the character getting much interest from my fellow fans until TWOK, albeit I'm not saying that's true outside my circle. The character was a vaguely charismatic thug. He was blandly written in TWOK, where he served more as a plot device than a character.
^ I just thought I'd throw that in. I have no real issue with Cumberbatch being Khan and I'm not arguing anything.
Outside of Trekdom how many people know Kahn's full name and ethnicity?
Anybody thinks old Spock is becoming a Star Trek Kenobi. i really don't know why do they need him this time.
But casting a non Japanese actor as Sulu is ok because? People think Asians all look the same and nobody would notice?
Do you seriously want this new Star Trek being weighed down with pointless old "canon".
Cumberbatch, an actor who I find repulsive to look at, so repulsive I don't watch Sherlock...
But they did it, so they're probably going to still be open for criticism.
I agree in Star Trek terms continuity is the same but I still believe they found the right actor for the role which matters most. In non Star Trek terms this is basically a fresh start and anything goes. If the Enterprise can have those massive nacelles then Khan can look like Sherlock Holmes. This is the same continuity. Tell that to Saavik and Zefram Cochrane!
