SPOILERS!!! NEW AICN RUMORS (APRIL 30)

OF course he could be called Soong because of people changing their name in marriage, and have either very little or zero of the ethnicity it implies.

:: waves to Jeri ::
That's what I assumed about Spiner's Soongs.

Greetings, Ms. Teacake. I'm present and ready to be spoiled now.

P.S. Indranee, right. :)

You want to be spoiled?! Which direction did the sun come up this morning? :D

Im disappointed if this is true, Khan would have been the last character to use on my list...

This Khan will have very different motivations to the scenery-chewing, giant-chested revenge nut from "Wrath of Khan". My guess is that he'll have been with the Klingons for the past 25 years. There will be no Genesis device or Carol Marcus. The Khan/Kirk fight won't be personal about a dead wife and long exile, it'll simply be Augment genius vs. our genius level repeat offender with the fate of the galaxy at stake.

And it's gonna be FUN.

What makes you think he'd have been with the Klingons? And why would he be wearing the Starfleet uniform and sideburns then?

Anyway, Kirk will not find Khan in space. Kirk could be his friend in the Academy.
I think Khan was already in Starfleet Academy in Star Trek.

I think Cumberbatch could have been captured by the Klingons and could be turned into a spy of the Klingons.
Or the way he would get into Starfleet, it would be by Peter Weller.
The problem is that Spock Prime knows Khan very well. Did Nimoy go into the movie because of it?

I have to admit to being a little disappointed in this decision. However, Cumberbatch is a fine actor and I still have faith in JJ and co to make an entertaining and exciting movie. I'd just rather have seen a new character or even seen one of the original series' Klingons re-used. I'm not sure what else can be done with Khan. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong.

The cast don't have to be the same ethnic backgrounds as their characters but they should at least look it.
Kirk and McCoy are meant to be white Americans, Scotty white Scottish, Uhura black African etc.
Says who? We've had remakes of other movies and television series where major character have changed ethnicity and gender. If this was recasting a character in the same continuity I might agree but the rule book is out the window with remakes, re-imagining concerned.
This is the same continuity. It's just a different timeline from 2233 onward. Barring some twist, the Khan here should be the same one played by Ricardo Montalban.

Just my speculation, based on the knowledge (assuming it's not BS) that Khan and the Klingons will feature. That, some time after George Kirk dies and the timelines diverge, the Klingons come across the SS Botany Bay. Thus, by the time of the movie we get to meet an adjusted-to-the-future Khan without any kind of "Space Seed" rehash.

As for the Starfleet uniform, he's probably infiltrated Starfleet, as an agent of the Klingons.

Tell that to Saavik and Zefram Cochrane!

Do you seriously want this new Star Trek being weighed down with pointless old "canon".

Regardless of what "Khan" it turns out to be, if any, I've gotta say always been perplexed by this fascination some fans have for the character. When I watched the show as a kid Khan never stood out any more than Kor or Kang or many other guest baddies. In fact, I don't recall the character getting much interest from my fellow fans until TWOK, albeit I'm not saying that's true outside my circle. The character was a vaguely charismatic thug. He was blandly written in TWOK, where he served more as a plot device than a character.

I agree. I don't think Khan really stood out until the movie. I think people look back in hindsight and see Khan as a great villain because of the success of TWOK and not Space Seed.

But if Khan is in the movie I am happy with that and I am also happy to see Spock, my favorite TOS character, back in the movie.

Outside of Trekdom how many people know Kahn's full name and ethnicity?

Or how to spell it. ;)

Anybody thinks old Spock is becoming a Star Trek Kenobi. i really don't know why do they need him this time.

Tee hee! And only a few weeks ago, you were campaigning for the insertion of Q into the narrative! :rommie:

So... is Alice Eve playing Marla McGivers? Or will Yeoman Janice Rand be tempted as a traitor?

But casting a non Japanese actor as Sulu is ok because? People think Asians all look the same and nobody would notice?

It's more of a ballpark thing. Like Saldana isn't of African descent, but her skin color isn't far off the mark from Nichols. If they made her white, that's like not even trying.

I don't think they needed to cast someone actually from India to be Khan (or Mexico, like Montalban). It's just that casting somebody so white doesn't seem right.

In a way, they did sort of tie their hands in that way. Obviously they're going to do whatever they want, and the whole alternate universe thing was an attempt not to piss off the more obsessive fans. But they did it, so they're probably going to still be open for criticism.

I think they should have just straight up said it was a reboot and left it at that. Then Khan could be green for all I care.

I agree in Star Trek terms continuity is the same but I still believe they found the right actor for the role which matters most. In non Star Trek terms this is basically a fresh start and anything goes. If the Enterprise can have those massive nacelles then Khan can look like Sherlock Holmes.

I think some fans have fascination for Khan because of the brilliant performance of Montalban and because Khan is a character that I consider anti-hero.
