Spock News

The most amusing thing is when someone (not anyone here) says "STD isn't Star Trek!" If it's not Star Trek, then why call it STD? The first two initials stand for "Star Trek". Unless STD stands for something else. :p

Oh god. No.
This will SO not gonna' end well...

They probably just mean portraying him like he was in 'The Cage', which really isn't like the Spock we know in most of TOS and onward.

I wonder if there will be a nod to the first novel, no plot details, but something like 'last saw you in That mission 2 years ago'.

That way it won't require people to read the novel to understand, just a generic statement, but people who read the novel will get it.

DSC is also written on the side of the Discovery's shuttles.

I don't think it stands for anything, as the Shenzhou's shuttles are labelled 'SHNZ'

DSC. The first three consonants. DiSCovery. So that's where the rationale comes from. DIS makes sense too, but it makes me think, "DIS and dat!"

Dis can also be used in place of the word insult.

Like 'That guy got dissed (insulted)'. Or 'She doesn't dis (insult) people'.

It's slang.

So I look over the article. They say they are exploring Spock's "formation" and his family life. Yet in neither the article or this thread do I see a mention made to Sybok.

What they meant was "There's a guy in front of me recording what I'm saying, and this sounds pretty good and safe and vague enough to me at this moment."

In several interviews they have said they want to explain why Spock never mentioned his sister. I think this is something that doesn't need explaining, but I guess they will try anyway. Spock is obviously a private person. He never mentioned his brother either until he showed up. Same with his parents and fiance.

I prefered DISC from the very beginning - one syllable, easy to say, easy to write, no weird side connotations - but since even the show itself has openly embraced DSC, I don't see any point in continuing to use any other abbreviations, unless you're deliberately trying to insult the show.

Dude... It's not "STD". Do you know what that is? It's "DSC".

I prefer DIS, which is what I use. It keeps with VOY and ENT, both of which are abbreviations based upon the first three letters of the one-word title after Discovery.

TNG and DS9 are of course based upon the first letter of each word after the Star Trek: This didn't work for VOY, ENT, or DIS for obvious reasons.

STD makes no sense because it wasn't STTNG, STDS9, STV, or STE. But DSC makes even less sense.

Since this conversation has derailed anyway:
DIS, DSC and STD are IMO all perfectly matching abbrevieations. It used to be the first three letters of each word, but that obviously changed for VOY, though probably only because "STV" was already taken at that point. I use DIS, because it matches with ENT and VOY, and also because it comes easy of the tongue. DSC is IMO the one most removed from the common naming convention, and it's the official one, so it's still commonly used as well (although not as often as the other ones). Really, the only hard requirements seem to be:
  1. three letters
  2. that all appear in the original title and
  3. non-confusing, e.g. clearly assignable to the corresponding show

And let's be clear here: If I would really like the show, I would use "STD" as well. It's just too good a joke to be ignored. I only use "DIS" because I don't want to come across as bullying towards it. It has had enough problems in it's first season that being objective about it is harsh enough criticism. But quite honestly, the show hopefully seems to improve with the new season, and if they manage to pull an ENT (which also started out poor, but completely turned around in Season 3 and I now genuinely like), at least at the point where I more like it than not like it - I'll probably start calling it "STD" as well. It's just too inviting. But I want to do that as a friendly jab, not as something demeaning. So the day I start calling it "STD" will be a GOOD day for the show.

That one isn't a hard requirement. We already have TWOK, TSFS, FC, 09 (or ST09) and ID (or STID).

That's a fair point, which I hadn't thought of before. I can see how tempting it is as a punchline, even if one enjoys the show.

Well, that's the MOVIES, so of course it's entirely different there!:D

Though to be honest: Three letters for each show does seem to be the common denominator. Which makes kinda' sense, since you are talking a lot more about the shows than the movies. And each movie as a single, unique title, so there ignoring the three letter rule makes sense.

But of course none of those are hard requirements anyway - Each of those can change as soon as a new show arrives for which a different rule makes more sense. But so far - remarkably - it has remained consistent over six shows (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS), and it can be asumed that for a new show, when produced, there will be an attempt to fit it in the same scheme as well. As long as it's possible.

Oh man its written on the shuttle, i mean what else people want, its DSC. But its a free world so u can call it ERY, ISC, DIS, SHIT whatever

I mean, you yourself noted that they all flow together (otherwise there would be no reason to fear confusing voy with stv).

But I would argue that even on the shows it's as much chance as system that we have strictly 3 letters so far. A 3 word subtitle obviously reduces to 3 letters and a 1 word subtitle can be reduced almost however you like, so why not match the rest. Sooner or later, though, there'll be a new series with a 2 word subtitle and it's not going to match the pattern.

Imagine a hypothetical series called New Frontier. Are we going to call it NEW? NWF? NFR? NFT? Of course not. It'll be NF, just like FC or ID.
