When this fist aired in the late '70s, I was thrilled that there was a sci-fi show with a storyline that went more than 1 episode. After repeated reruns of TOS Trek and Space:1999, it was great that this show has a continuing story that you had to follow along with story arcs and characters that came in/out throughout. All the sci-fi afterwards was a bit of a disappointment to me until DS9 came along.
Also, I found it a personal challenge to spot the "child-safe" editing. At the age of 10, I KNEW that the "robot tanks" were manned, that Sgt. Knox gave his life for the crew and that General Lysis (sp?) blew himself up in an act of seppuku. As a big foreign film watcher, I'd love a really well-done english subtitled dvd of series 1. The story really is epic in it's scope for a show of it's era.
