This is the second trailer where people involved in the film have responded to backlash and have to go back and change elements of the film. (The first being Aladdin) That's interesting.

What gets me about them hearing the criticism and fixing it is that it didn't just come out of the blue. There was criticism the moment the first images of Sonic were revealed, so it wasn't a surprise. They'd have to have known they messed up, and maybe releasing the trailer early was a way for them to gauge some reaction. Still, I wonder if they weren't already working on redesigning him before releasing the trailer.
Thing is about Aladdin is, his blue form was apparently never supposed to be his main form, rather one of the many forms he changes to, possibly as a nod to Robin William's genie. It wasn't until the longer trailer they released later that we saw his true form.

This movie has been developed for so damned long, after that much time they have to have had something better designed. So unless this is actually a troll trailer and they always had a proper model waiting, it's a fuckup that took way too long to notice. Or a joke that they badly misjudged.
They can't have turned up at work, stared at that for hours on end while rendering it and thought "this is okay."

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is this early for a trailer? Six months prior to release seems about traditional for most trailers, many are even released earlier than that.
Maybe for epic blockbusters it’s normal. What other movies not called Star Wars being released in November or December already have trailers released?
My thoughts. A Marvel movie, Star Wars, an Oscar punch? Yeah.

A teaser around 6, a full trailer about 3-4 months out, with a second or third with more completed scenes ~5-6 weeks before?
That’s for huge blockbusters with huge marketing budgets. They really think this movie is that? They are delusional
Maybe they knew they'd screwed up but management was still pushing for it to release as is, and they did this as a plea for help? Release trailer as is hoping to get a negative enough reaction to force management's hands into agreeing to a redesign?

Exactly, John Wick didn't even need to start making much noise until about 3 months towards the film. Honestly it's looking more like it was a troll and they always had another proper trailer in the works, or someone made them release one early to force a change.
Anyway, I tried digging out my old Fleetway Comics to start making some Amy/Tekno concept art because...this is where my life is right now.

I'll admit, after just reviewing IMDB I was surprised to see how few movies after July currently have trailers. I don't know, I'm sure it's happened quite a bit in the past. Off the top of my head I know when I saw Days of Future Past in May 2014 there was a trailer for Kingsman which wasn't released until February 2015. Granted, that movie was postponed, but in May 2014 it was expected to have an October 2014 release, so they had that at least five months in advance. Still, Kingsman wasn't really an "epic blockbuster."
Were things changed? I had just assumed the version of Genie saw in the first trailer was just an earlier stage, and by the time the second trailer came out they had done a bit more work.
Genie is one of his forms apparently, and that was early CGI, so there isn't much to change.
Sonic is his entire model the whole movie through. And that doesn't even start to fix whats wrong with the movie.

The video game character was popular, but so was Mario. He didn't fare so great in the big screen either. Then again, that was 1993...
Didn't Jim Carrey retire from acting? Nice to see him back. He definitely presents the baddie as being more than a cardboard caricature. Certainly something's off kilter, but I registered it in a good way. Being toned down after the excess of the of mid/late-1990s is a change that seems to work for the baddie.
Shame the actual Sonic character looks... naff.
Cue the cliche buzzwords and templated structure of the teaser/trailer.
And, of course, excesses in CGI regarding warships. Doesn't seem very inspiring. But who is the target audience? Young children will adore it regardless. In which case hope the parents survive it or skip out for a nice replenishment of artery-clogging buttered popcorn for the 10th time or something...
Ditto for, as Nth Doctor pointed out, the incessant needle skippin' routine of the character being taken from its own universe into *ours* as if it's never been done before, never mind done better previously. Actually, I'm trying to remember when it actually worked. Arguably never, usually it's best to get the audience to accept the structure of the characters' world than to spoonfeed and pander by chucking 'em into ours. The show's not real life nor a documentary but entertainment. Which doesn't mean it can't have a message but after umpteen times with the stock formula now...

And tomalak301 raises a good point - all the times going back to re-shoot. Sonic looks bad, but there's more to a character than mere looks.

Sonic came out in 1990 in a separate racing game, then his own in June 1991, tapes managed well enough until the MiniDisc era of 1998-2000 when DVD's killed nearly all rivals. The comics and cartoons had either tapes or futuristic style tech.
The model they used looks cheap enough that they could have used it for one trailer where it's in less than 50% of the footage at 720 at best.

The trailer probably got released because Detective Pikachu is coming next weekend and it’s likely attached to it in order to ride the hype train associated with it. It just backfired horribly.
