Yeah, I thought so too. I loved the opening scene with Sonic in the recreation of the first level from the game.

The character animation design is better, but the plot still looks stupid.

Well, that's definitely a better trailer than the first. Still not convinced about this movie though.

Animator- We just had to not see our families for a few months and take one five minute break all day but we did it!

    Slightly different trailer

The first trailer made the movie look a LOT more enjoyable than the second one does.

It's a wonder as to how they mangled Sonic so much in the first trailer, when they can clearly produce a much better likeness. I heard one conspiracy notion that Paramount deliberately screwed up, to gain kudos the second time around.

Sonic looks better, it's a.... "better" trailer..... Still looks like a terrible and annoying movie that'll only be enjoyable on some small level because of Jim Carey.

It still has the inherent problem most movies of this type have; that they're forcing creatures from another world into our world when they have a perfectly good world of their own to set their movie in, and no movie has demonstrated that this setup successfully works. I'd be perfectly happy with it just being a 3D animated movie.

I felt the same thing about the Smurf movies. They had an already established interesting fantasy world to set it in, and instead chose to have them visit our world.

Although I have to give credit to having done such a drastic redesign. I didn't think they'd take it so far and they've done a great job with the redesign. Still feel this movie is a terrible idea though.

I think it's very likely it was getting rushed to market, probably given a number of excuses via executives such as "No, they won't care or notice". Given the time, it's clear that they could produce something much better. It's amazing how much more expressive Sonic is in this version, a clear night and day difference.

I completely agree. There is no reason they couldn't have just done a fully animated movie based on the world of the games, I think a lot of people, myself included, would have preferred that.

Exactly this. I'm so tired of this trope. I want to see those creatures in their world, not ours.

I know Sonic is the main character, but for Tails and Knuckles are just as much a part of the series as he is, so I'm honestly kind pissed that there is not sign of them anywhere in this.
    Confession Time:
When the first games came out I was absolutely loved the games, and Tails was my favorite character. I liked him so much for a short time I wanted people to call me Tails.

Yeah, it's quite a stupid trope that really serves nothing. Yeah, there's the demographic thing, ie not the right demographic for it, yadda yadda yadda. But even when taking the demographic into the equation, if the purpose is to get a whole new generation into an IP that hasn't had much exposure recently, then really, they're doing a disservice to potential new fans by robbing them of a good introduction into both the world and the characters. In the end, they're expending more energy trying to explain away and justify why these creatures are here in our world.

It's particularly galling in the case of the Smurfs which has had a long rich history with comic books to draw from, and would be far easier to get kids into as straight 3D animation and none of this world-crossing.

They did eventually do a fully CGI animated The Smufs movies, Smurfs: The Lost Village, that did end up getting better reviews than the live action/CGI ones.

The lead designer on the new design is Tyson Hesse. He's worked on other official sonic projects.

According to one person in contact with one of the animators, it wasn't done in a crunch.

Yeah, I think I heard about that, but that was after the first two live-action movies, wasn't it? Begs the question of why they didn't do that in the first place.
