Sonic the hedgehog movie trailer

It looked like a deliberately bad video game movie adaptation someone made as a parody on YouTube for a laugh. Has box office fail written all over it.

Maybe he's got kids or grand kids who are big Sonic fans who talked him into it. That seems to be one of the most common explanations I see for older actors appearing in these kind of movies.

As great an actor as Michael Hogan is, his career isn't really at the point where he can be picky about what he does or doesn't want to act in. This is a job, it puts money in his wallet and food on the table. Really that simple.

This is the part where Death arrives to start the End Times....right?

That just looked ridiculously bad. I like Sonic, but ugh. They should have made an animated movie instead. I kind of feel sorry for Jim Carrey. I don't even like him enough to feel he's the best thing about it.

In general, I really don't think fish-out-of-water stories work very well for video game characters, or in general fantasy properties like the Smurfs which were already mentioned.

Yeah, I never understand why they always feel they have to bring these kind of characters into the real world. A Pixar or Dreamworks style animated Sonic movie set purely in the world of the games/comics/TV series could be really cool.

Mostly because that would be entirely CGI, and Paramount isn't Disney/Pixar. They don't have quite the same expertise with this, as the mess they made of something only about a 5th CGI shows after 8 years of development.

What I am trying to figure out why release this trailer so far in advance?
If Paramount thought it was a great movie, then you start with a teaser poster, then a short teaser trailer weeks later, then full trailer months later. Build the hype, build the anticipation level.
On flip side, if Paramount really though it was going to be an awful movie, they would limit the marketing to maybe a single trailer two weeks before the release to minimize marketing costs.
So what's their thought process? Show something to general audience before Pikachu Detective, as in, "ain't he cute, we also got someone", why don't you give us some of your money... 6 months from now?!
It's confusing marketing. It's as if someone in marketing knows this movie is horrible, decided to release the trailer very early, so that Paramount get's roasted and pulls the release. I don't get it. Maybe we'll know more at some point.

Yeah, releasing a trailer for this kind of movie 5, 6, 7 months or whatever before it comes out is sort of an odd direction to go.

According to "sources" the filmmakers have taken to heart fan reactions say they're going to redesign Sonic for the movie. Granted, they can only go so far since eye lines and such won't match up if, say, they make him shorter, but there's something, I guess....

Yep, two big issues emerge when they do that: I think that with all due respect, people expect and want to see Sonic in his own world, especially if it's the first movie introducing a whole new generation to a franchise. That's exactly the kind of problem the first Smurfs movie suffered from, and I think they fixed that by the 3rd movie? And secondly, if they're not able to do that, they're creating a disconnect and one of their own making, and one that often differs wildly from the IP theyr'e using to the point you wonder why they even bother. It's just not going to sit well with anyone who's familiar with the IP and it's likely not going to be very interesting to anyone who isn't either.

As for the music in the trailer, yeah the use of the song is baffling. Much better choice would have been to use In The Hall of the Mountain King which had been used in one of the animated series. Not only would it have been more fitting, but less expensive as well.

And this is why you partner with a studio that has experience with it. There's no shame in hiring outside help. They could say, partner with Dreamworks.

They should've known it would be a mistake to cast Kevin Spacey as Sonic. Looking forward to what Plummer does with the role.

One thing I already love about Detective Pikachu, just from the bits and pieces we've gotten from the marketing, is that they are actually creating an entire Pokemon world rather than just dumping Pikachu and the other Pokemon into our world.
If they didn't want to recreate the world from rest of the franchise for the Sonic movie, then something like that, with the anthropomorphic animal characters coexisting alongside humans, would still have been better than just dumping Sonic into the real world.

Yeah, while I'm not versed at all in Pikachu, the way you describe it sounds like a good compromise. Otherwise there's just so much disparity between what already exists vs what is being presented in the movie that it can't help be a problem.

The biggest issue there (with the fan-made recreation) is that the change cannot be that dramatic. The eye-line is dropped too much so the scenes with a live-action character wouldn't work (they'd no longer be looking at one another.) So Sonic's eyes can't move that drastically.

Lol, I'd like to see them try to pull this off. 6 months is not a lot of time to redesign the main cgi character. On the other hand maybe there probably aren't too many (if any at all) live action scenes they would have to reshoot.

6 months to do it, and I'm betting the artists aren't going to be paid nearly enough to do that. It is their fault in the first place, but that's a lot of long nights of re-rendering. Plus most of the rest of the movie is shit, they can't fix that.

Well, we have to be careful assigning blame. Some low level artist who doesn't make decisions and is only told to do the work, is most likely not at fault here. In such movies head designers come up with multiple rough sketches and then give them to head studio folks to approve. Only after that approval does the actual cgi work start. So in this case the fault is with the execs who approved this shit. The poor graphics designer working overtime to do the actual work doesn't have any say in what is or isn't approved.
And I don't know what the result will be if they actually come up with a decent Sonic. Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey, he'll be just fine in this movie. Rest of the characters won't have major impact on the movie. So it's really Sonic and Carrey showcase. If they fix Sonic, maybe it won't be as bad.
