So Like 20" of snow by Saturday afternoon

Hmm. I tried to go to the mall, but the snowplow did that thing where there's a huge embankment behind my parking spot.

And I didn't think to buy a snow shovel (never needed one this far south until now).

I think it's time to take a walk to the (smaller) mall next door.....

Getting any decent pics of the monuments was futile. Visibility was about a foot when we made it down there.

I got to the Fair Oaks Mall only to find they'd decided to close early today. Even that drive---20 minutes, normally 10---was rather dicey.

I have no idea why Fairfax County hates putting down sand when it snows, but apparently they do. There's absolutely none. They seem to satisfy themselves with pushing the snow around and *maybe* sprinkling a little salt.

I saw no evidence of sand or anything else on the roads in Howard County so don't feel bad. Granted, I haven't ventured beyond my neighborhood (and then only on foot) so I can only assume that they've been working on the main roads thusfar. I'd have zero chance getting out of my parking lot or down the residential streets because they've only plowed them like once and you can't even tell.

It's 6:00pm. I never left the condo today. None of us did. I think I'm starting to get cabin fever.

Same in town. They were plowing but after 5 minutes there was no evidence of plowing. I guess it's just too much for anything to keep up with so why bother? Once it dies down after midnight they'll coat the roads with every chemical known to man.

Reagan National is now at 14.7 inches. 8th largest DC snowfall ever. Largest December snowfall ever. See? Obama went to Copenhagen and now global warming is over! The seas have stopped rising. Mission accomplished!

You can actually see asphalt on my road. They've plowed a few times at least since I finally dragged myself out of bed at 3:00, though I'm sure the less important roads are probably being left alone in favor of the major routes. It's still really only suitable for 4wd, but people are getting through.

I'm still not not leaving the house. Maybe tomorrow I'll consider shoveling out my car or something.

^Yeah. The street looks like it was untouched. I guess it isn't part of the Snow Emergency Route, since the cars are still parked along the curbside since yesterday.

Oh okay. Mass ave is how I'd get into the downtown area, and to school from here. I guess I'm staying put. :) All those poor ambassadors stuck in their compounds. Well, the British one is HUGE. So I'm sure they are fine, drinking, eating and laughing in their own pub somewhere in the British Embassy grounds.

Light pollution run a muck, I guess. This orange glow always appears after a snow storm, but this time it's particularly obscene. I can easily read in the dark by it.
