So Like 20" of snow by Saturday afternoon

I was just out at lunch and saw lines at the gas stations along Rt. 40 in Baltimore. I've never understood that. If you're going to be snowed in, why are you worried about having a full tank of gas? In this day and age, if you can get on the roads enough to drive, there will be a gas station open somewhere. It'd be one thing if they were fleeing the region, but for the most part these folks are just going to go home and sit.

And yes, Robert Maxwell, as others have said, people around here do flip out like that at the slightest mention of snow.

We may get more than a foot in northern Maryland. I'm sure there won't be any toilet paper, milk, or bread to be found in the county by this evening.

Do people normally flip out like that when it's gonna snow a lot?

On the news once they showed someone who had 6 gallons of milk and that's it before it snowed. I can't leave my house for 12 hours! I need four months supply of milk!!!!

 I guess my opinion of what constitutes a "lot" of snow is warped since I lived in Alaska for a while. I've seen one Indiana blizzard that deposited a lot of snow. We were homebound for 3 days. Most side streets--such as the one we lived on--didn't get plowed for days. And when they did, the snow was just shoved on top of my car. A nice guy drove by in a truck, though, and hooked onto the front of my car and pulled it out for me. :)

Even so, we didn't have to go stock up on anything beforehand. There's always at least a few days' worth of essentials in the house.

The Winter Storm Watch has been replaced by a Winter Storm Warning. It says 5-10 inches "with some greater accumulations locally, especially in and around southern Maryland."

This is probably going to screw with my attempt to meet a friend to see Boondock Saints 2 tomorrow...

Ah hem...

Even in Alaska you don't get enough snow that you couldn't leave your house for 4 months.

It's just so insanely cold and dark no one wants to live their homes for 4 months.

The most snow I remember getting was in 2001, we had several storms 20+ inches and one with 28 inches in like 16 hours, it was nuts.

The problem in Alaska is that it falls below freezing and stays there, so any snow you get is just going to keep on piling up. In every parking lot there would be an enormous snow pile, from all the winter's plowing.

And the snow isn't the problem so much as the cold. When it's 70 below zero, you can freeze to death in minutes. Going anywhere is an ordeal because you have to get so bundled up. So you gotta make any expedition worth the prep time.

Too bad you can't send it our way. I could handle a Late Start on Monday. Or Tuesday. But not Wednesday, because it's only half a day.

I managed to get my flight changed to this afternoon, so I'm now in exotic Toronto waiting for my connection to Newark in a few hours and it looks like I'll beat the storm. Half the point of flying back to NJ was to escape the snow and cold, not to see more of it!

*sigh* I work weekends. I'd already asked to have Sunday off but I'm still expected to show up for work tomorrow morning. I live approx. 18 miles from the office. My boss lives about 4. I may be calling out tomorrow and forcing her to go in for a bit, instead.

Tomorrow morning you might be able to get there. Getting back in the afternoon or evening will be a different story altogether, as the heavy snow will be after 11am or so from what I understand.

Coming down pretty fast and furious right now in the city no though, actually.

My fiancée woke me up with her snuggling and working on her schoolwork. I looked out the window overlooking the Rock Creek Park. It's a winter wonderland out there. I'm looking forward to the pictures of the snowstorm here and other sites today.

I live smack dab in the "jackpot" area... twenty to twenty four inches by Sunday morning

I hate this crap! We are expecting 12-18 inches in NY/LI today. I have church tonight and we were supposed to go Christmas Caroling.

I need to decide whether or not to try and drive to Manassas. Obviously I can't fly (icing conditions at the surface), but I was scheduled for a flying lesson and doing it in the Redbird simulator is a possibility.

I made the mistake of trying to go to the store on Friday. I was genuinely out of milk, so I thought I could pop over and grab some.....and I ended up standing in the checkout line for an hour. And that's with all 10 or so checkouts going.

I wouldn't. It's snowing so heavily the plows can't keep up. I'd hate to imagine what 66 or 234 look like now.

With my luck, the airports are going to be closed Sunday night.

And the Metro is going to break down.... again.

My fiancee measured the snow on the table out on the terrace. It's at nine inches now.

I just looked at some webcams around town. New Ave and Florida Ave was empty (there is usually a traffic jam going north). The streets of DC looks quiet (by DC standards). But if you ask someone like my Dad, there's too much traffic.

Nothing in my neck of TN. Plenty of cold cold rain though, but no snow as yet.
