So is Capt Shaw the new, reigning biggest a##hole in Trek?

You had a compelling captain in Rios, but they left him back in time, now you have Shaw.

But I do agree, Seven being let in, from probably a 20 year gap from voyager to now, and being a 1st officer is probably as good as she's going to get, They won't trust her Cadet Kirk style and just give her a ship right off the bat. Let her do a few years as a 1st officer to get used to being in starfleet. Yes she was on Voyager for 4 years, but wasn't in the system, and that was 20 years ago.

The guys don't always get it right (Riker is currently flying Titan around in circles).

The biggest jerk in Trek isn't Shaw by light years, not even close. As pointed out many times he is in the right on practically every aspect of what he does except for the ex-Borg comments. The new biggest jerk is probably Beverly Crusher, or the character they're calling Beverly Crusher in this show who only seem to have the name and actress in common with the TNG character.

I too was disappointed that they just dumped off Rios. So much potential. But they wanted to make sure they really hammered home that he is gone and we well never see him again.

One of season 2's greatest mistakes, i think.

That might make a compelling argument if this show hadn't already ditched 99% of the new characters it had introduced in the first season just so we could do this TNG reunion this year.

It might have been asked before, but outside of Shaw, the rest of the Titan crew no named Seven or La Forge all seem to be just as big of assholes. The Trill doctor was crass toward Beverly and there were crew members blaming Jack for their predicament. The writing in this regard seems to have them be unreasonable to make our old friends look better.

One subtle thing that Shaw missed in his little takedown of Picard over dinner was that Picard very recently (as in less than 2 years ago in-universe) exposed Commodore Oh, director of Starfleet Security, as a traitor. That's kind of a big deal. Doesn't magically make Picard trying to hijack the Titan right, but you think considering not that long ago Picard's wild ravings ended up being correct on a very serious matter, Shaw might've made more effort to find out what Picard really wanted.

They didn't "dump" Rios. Santiago Cabrera was always supposed to leave after last season. He served the time he agreed to. He wasn't dumped.

It's like Chris Eccleston on DW. He signed on to do one season, and one alone, and did exactly that. He wasn't fired, he didn't quit, he served the terms of his contract - just like Cabrera did. Simple as that.

They could've left the door open for his character to return someday instead of weeping angel-ing him, to use a term from Dr. Who.

Exactly. The next, next generation. A progression as TNG may from TOS. Totally new.

I do love the nostalgia stuff. A continued 24th century and SNW for a TOS do-over with modern sensibilities. What I'd like most though is a 26th century show. Shift the setting 100 years forward and break away.

Why? Trek's already at the 32nd century, why not go from there?

Actually, no. Eccleston's Doctor Who contract had the option to do another season, which he had at one point been considering. Indeed, the finale to his season had an alternate ending filmed where the Doctor does not regenerate, while the writers for the second season all wrote their episodes believing they were writing for Eccleston. However Eccleston had a negative experience he had filming the first season and he felt pressured by production when, having felt he was taking too long to get back to them about season, talks were already stated with David Tennant about taking over the role. So Eccleston decided not to comeback for a second season.

Though as it turned out, his contract had a clause in it stating that by refusing to do a second season, he couldn't work in any British production for the next two years, which is why he had to go to the US and act in the first season of Heroes.

What if Captain Shaw and Admiral Nechayev had a child??

That's the stuff of nightmares right there.

Then that child would be especially pissed at Picard for not using Hugh to commit genocide on the Borg.

At least we learned more about Captain Shaw in tonight's episode:
    • He's from Chicago, Illinois.
    • He was aboard the USS Constance as an engineer when it took part in the Battle of Wolf 359.
    • He was one of ten people who made it off and has survivor guilt
    • He has a prosthetic leg. Whether or not he got that during or after the Battle of Wolf 359 or doing last week's episode is still unknown.
