Part of his droid mind - maybe a part he didn't fully understand - want to help the kids. He liked them. But his programming wouldn't allow him to go against his rightful Captain (Jod.) Even though he knew "unclaimsies" was probably bullshit it just gave him enough of a reason to bypass his directives and save them.
Plus yes, between snowball eating his brain, having his encrypted memories unlocked, and getting to spend time with the kids, he's developed enough of a personality to skirt around his programming.
