Shows you LIKED that lasted too long.

Oh, I forgot:

Stargate: SG1
Should have been cancelled after about five or six years, then have a movie to tie off the strings of like Replicators and the Ga'ould.

The length of its run wasn't the problem. It was the fact that they broached several good ideas during that run, yet failed to dramatize those ideas well, instead of just opting for the most tired, cliched approach.

Quality, not quantity, is the problem with TV.

I thought "Are You Being Served" went about 2 seasons too long. They should have stopped when Young Mr. Grace and Mr. Lucas left the show. After that, the episodes were rehashes of old episodes.

Quality is subjective to the viewer and no matter how good something is a person is going to get tired of it.

It was the same thing over and over again: blah blah new powerful system lord blah blah, the Replicators are back even though we thought we destroyed them for good last season, while not tieing up the show's mythology but rather complicating it and adding useless aspects just too keep the show going, much like "The X-Files".

When the actors have that look in their eyes of "we're bored and we're just collecting a paycheck now", it's time to end the show. Richard Dean Anderson leaving is akin to David leaving X-Files.

I used to enjoy the show and looked forward to new episodes, but it got lost in itself and the greed of the makers to milk it.

"CHiPs" is another show that should have ended earlier than it did. Here is what I posted about a later episode:

That a mother with a child in the passenger seat would take her eyes off the road so long as to side swipe another car on the FREEWAY, or that a car door could simply just "open" on it's own and the baby fall out (coincidently upright!), or that Ponch could just swing by on his cycle and grab the hadle, picking it up as he goes.

I haven't seen the last season of "CHiPs", particularly this episode ("The New Guy") in a while, but if it was anything like this, I think it should have gotten cancelled sooner. Good grief!

Only a portion of B5's fifth season - the infamous Byron's teep subplot - was regrettable. The rest after that point was still of good enough quality that I wouldn't classify the series as "lasting too long".
I listed Babylon 5 in my list of show that went on too long, as I took 'lasted too long' to mean 'started to show a noticable decline in quality'. Babylon 5 did that with the fifth season with the storylines involving Byron, Lennier and Lochleys cliched past. Not to mention episodes featuring Penn and Teller or worse Bo and Mack. Had it ignored these storylines and wrapped up the characters/Centauri arcs in a 13 epsiode season it could gone out at the same standard it was in season three or four. Instead it ended on a 'good' standing rather than the 'excellent' it deserved to.

Who ever came up with Gunsmoke. Good one!

I confess I do not know the "Are you being served?" time line that well

Well, the episode that is after the movie has all the members of Grace Brothers talking about the trip in the movie and the season before has them talking about the trip. I had no idea there was a movie until I saw the dvd being advertised
