Actually, what didn't ring true for me was that Young and Rush were the only ones to recuse themselves from the lottery. There are a lot of people there, a number of them older. It's hard to believe there are no "women and children first" types around.

Oh, I believed it.
I didn't.

As RJDemonicus pointed out, there were quite a few older people in the crowd. Not everyone grew up in today's world where everyone is a self-serving, self-entitled, and all around selfish dickweed. Many older people (even today despite that mindset) had the benefit of understanding the concept of sacrificing oneself for the betterment of the group.

Note that despite the unfounded accusations Young made, both Rush and Young understood that concept. At least one or two others should have followed suit, if not more.

I wouldn't expect it from anyone in the younger crowd, though. Me me me me me.

You make it sound like it's a bad thing? The idea of women first men second has been dying for a long time and I hope it continues to choke. It's stupid and sexist. I can understand the children but women?

^ Kaylee Frye did something similar.

You mean the slut? Yeah looking back at the archive a mod forbade anyone form mentioning.

And as for the sets, I don't know how they'd redesign those without the story looking contrived. I don't see how the ship could get transformed or upgraded in a plausible fashion that fits with the show.
Once they make peace with this being their home, they'll do what everybody does in a new house. Pick up some potted plants, some nice posters for the walls, some new furniture, paint, etc.
If they did that, the ship itself would still look the same.

Plus, it costs money to overhaul sets on a significant scale and I don't think there's any sort of critical mass of viewers or people behind the camera who are unhappy enough with the gritty look for that to happen.
I don't know about that. This fad has to end someday,...
I don't consider it a fad. This is what serious drama is today. It won't go away, but it'll evolve. Who knows, maybe it'll turn into something you do like. Whatever happens though is unlikely to happen suddenly with SGU.

What I like about this level of drama is that it more or less gives us a sense of what real people would do if this ship and this situation were real. That's something you don't get with lighter fare that puts the emphasis on fun, adventure and wise-cracks from larger than life heroes. That sort of entertainment is good too, don't get me wrong, but it's also good to have stuff like BSG or SGU. And yes, I know that those shows are stylized and dramatized, but they're still better at giving us a sense of realism than anything that's not a documentary.

...and I have to wonder how happy the Stargate folks really are with the strange changes to their franchise.
It's not really a change for the franchise. The 1994 movie was a lot closer to SGU than it was to SG-1 or Atlantis. If anything, the franchise has returned to the way it started. The shows are run by different people though, and they're probably following a directive, so who knows what they're thinking.

Does anyone know how the past two weeks have been ratings-wise? MGM and the SyFy Channel were quick to trumpet the uptick in ratings for week two, but I haven't seen a word about the ratings for weeks three or four anywere. I recall seeing the ratings for Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate SG-1 pretty consistently in the past. So what's the deal?

yeh part 1 got...

2.09 million...Stargate Universe dropped 14 percent from the previous week’s 2.44 million. Meanwhile Sanctuary dropped, but not nearly as steep, off 4.5 percent from last week’s 1.85 million to score 1.76 million

But still, it's there; the token failed mutiny,

What? I was shocked there wasn't more of a mutiny.

I'm not. It seems that most of these people are scientists or military types, who generally have a good head on their shoulders. Unlike the previous SG shows, no one (yet) seems outwardly comically cowardly. I think they knew that trying to do a mutiny wouldn't accomplish anything.

Also, there is the fact that they are in a terrible situation to begin with. It's possible that most have come to the conclusion that they are probably going to die anyway.

Change sometimes is good.
Good change is indeed good...bad changes, not so much. Dreary lighting, jump zooms are aesthetics patented by BSG-yes, Firefly did it first, but FF lasted a meager 13 eps, while Galactica went on to become critically slobbered on (deservedly so for S1), and signature series that put SyPhy on the map for tv people who ignored the genre beforehand...
Coming after BSG, the tone feels like pointless imitation, rather than the innovation like the first 2 shows. :shifty:

I too have wondered who well the show fared in week four with Darkness. None of the media sites I frequent have posted week 4 ratings thus far...

Unless a big episode you will normally have to wait several days for cable ratings.

^ I've noticed that a lot of people who ordinarlily take issue with most sex scenes liked the one with Kaylee, but I could never see why that one in particular was the exception. To me they're all pretty much the same.

I agreed with a lot of last week's predictions about the plot, and most of them did come to pass (mainly the Destiny powering itself with the solar energy). My main worry was that the drama would seem too contrived or overwrought. I don't think it was in any way except the "doubt" of Rush towards the end. Was that really necessary? I don't think so.

I saw a couple others comment on the music, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was outstanding. What really caught my ear were the notes from the SG1 music. Considering we no longer have a big, bombastic opening sequence in this series, hearing the "old" music is nice now and then.

The visuals with the sun were gorgeous, and I liked the more detailed look at the shuttle. I like how its design mirrors the Destiny itself in some ways.

According to MingNa's twitters, they've filmed the last ep of the season and are awaiting word on renewal for a second season. I'm at the point where I would like to see this show continue beyond S1 (I like to generally give a new show 2-5 eps to "hook" me).

Maybe because Kaylee completely took charge of that situation. She successfully completed a job interview while putting her clothes back on. There was really no doubt about why she was there----she was using Bester for his engine.

Whereas with this scene, it really felt more like Scott was using Chloe. There was a lot of uncertainty on her part.

I'm hesitant to define my feelings entirely since I'm not sure I understand them, but at a guess, I'd say I'm annoyed at the way female characters who are uncertain about about whether or not to go through with things usually do anyway. If you're not sure, don't!

When the girl clearly and definitively wants things to go a certain way, it's sometimes a different kind of awkward, but it doesn't push my buttons the way this scene did.

This one was pretty dull.

Another dull boring episode, wonderful. Just what this brand new show needs in it's opening few episodes.

Out of all the positive posts about the episode you took notice more of the one that says it was boring.

Well, it wasn't just any post... it was a Kelso post. :bolian:

I'm enjoying the show, for the most part, but this episode did nothing for me. It didn't help that the episode's resoluton was obvious a week before it aired. ;)

It was a'right, but "Black Sun" (Space: 1999) did this whole thing a helluv a lot better. The character moments in "Light" were flat and uninteresting, nothing like the speculative talk about the cosmos between old friends Koenig and Bergman.

Great episode, I'll say 7.5/10. I think the first 5 episodes fit together well when taken as a whole.

I see people are already clamouring for more action and mission of the week story lines, I find that interesting...

Glad to see that Rush isn't turning out to be a Baltar clone like everyone was calling him at first.

As for them freaking out... people who work on secret government projects on Earth and I would assume in outer space have a certain degree of psychological screening done. They worked and even lived off-world and were no doubt aware of the potential dangers when they signed up. I'm not saying this makes them immune to irrational behaviour or fear, but I don't think their reactions would be on exactly the same curve as a random sampling of people off the street.

Soldiers follow orders. Their commander volunteered to die himself and was going to die with them, I see no reason they'd all try to mutiny en masse. And to accomplish what, exactly?

If they did that, the ship itself would still look the same.
But the sets would be improved. Nothing can be done about the ship itself; the design isn't bad, it's just that it has that dull gray Star Wars bas relief look.

I don't consider it a fad. This is what serious drama is today. It won't go away, but it'll evolve. Who knows, maybe it'll turn into something you do like. Whatever happens though is unlikely to happen suddenly with SGU.
It may, as long as SGU is in the right place at the right time. Maybe after a quarter of a century it's not technically a fad anymore, but it still can't last forever; when it reaches the level of self parody that nuBSG represented, it's got to be nearing the end.

What I like about this level of drama is that it more or less gives us a sense of what real people would do if this ship and this situation were real. That's something you don't get with lighter fare that puts the emphasis on fun, adventure and wise-cracks from larger than life heroes. As Star Trek and other shows have demonstrated, it's quite possible to write adult drama without contrived situations, forced conflicts and adolesent cynicism. I like fun adventure, too, but that's not what I'm talking about; I'm talking about real adult drama, not what a teenager thinks adult drama should be.

It's not really a change for the franchise. The 1994 movie was a lot closer to SGU than it was to SG-1 or Atlantis. If anything, the franchise has returned to the way it started. The shows are run by different people though, and they're probably following a directive, so who knows what they're thinking.
Well, that could be; I've never seen the movie.

The hell? Practically every single episode of Star Trek, especially those featuring technobabble, in every single incarnation relied completely on contrived situations! XD

7. It's interesting, there's not really a whole lot going on but it's still entertaining to watch. Basically they don't know what to do and just ride it out. The ship saves the day. It really shouldn't work at all. It wasn't great, but they still pulled of an entertaining episode, to an extent.

I don't know what the show runners plan is? This is working for right now but will get really old in short order. I can't believe that they could possibly think that this formula will work (ships knows all and saves the day) for long so I'm thinking that they must have a change-up planned. Or so I'm hoping. We shall see.

If anyone's interested, I'm reposting JuanBolio's prediction...

My prediction for next week - the sun is going to recharge the ship, but they won't know that until the last possible second, and in the meantime will be at each other's throats as to who survives and who doesn't. Everyone will be exposed for who they truly are in a life-or-death scenario, as well as who would off who if it came down to it.

You have my word.
(And you have my bow)
(and MY axe)

Not to steal his thunder, but wasn't that all bleeding obvious? Of course that was what was going to happen!
