The seven red bursts represent the seven seals mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

The red angels are the seven angelic heralds of the apocalypse. Their "trumpet" call is what disrupted the Enterprise's systems, because they were not yet ready to receive the word in its pure form.

At first Starfleet believes the apocalypse to represent the end of all life in the galaxy, and indeed it is accompanied by some disastrous events leading up to it, but it will be discovered that it's actually a revelation of knowledge (the other meaning of the term apocalypse) about the origins of the universe, one that ties together multiple faith's creation myths (including the African folktale mentioned by Burnham) across multiple species and bridges the gap between faith and science.

Upon the "Lamb" opening a seal from the book, a judgment is released or an apocalyptic event occurs. The opening of the first four Seals release The Four Horsemen, each with his own specific mission.[6:1-8] The opening of the fifth seal releases the cries of martyrs for the "word/Wrath of God".[6:9-11] The sixth seal prompts earthquakes and other cataclysmic events.[6:12-17] The seventh seal cues seven angelic trumpeters who in turn cue the seven bowl judgments and more cataclysmic events.

The interesting thing to me is that there are seven red bursts, and one is visited so far. So we have six more to "explore" but another 13 episodes. Therefore unless you presume almost everything from here on in is a two parter, some of the plots must be something else - whether it be random side adventures Discovery gets caught up in along the journey, finding Spock, or something else entirely.

An interesting question is if Berg and Harberts actually had any idea how they were going to end the season before they were fired.

I think the certainty with which some people suggest it's the Iconians is odd. I can barely remember the Iconians, and that's only because of the novelverse.

If that's the Enterprise, those are Klingons and that's a Klingon bird of prey, those can be Iconians too.

I have patience but the whole idea never really seemed that interesting to me. I’m kinda getting to my limit with these season spanning stories (this goes for a lot of shows). DS9 did it better IMO. A season(s) long story but broken up with comfy episodes of the week. I’ll still watch, but I won’t post here all that much.

You can't be serious. That's like watching the first 10 seconds of a movie trailer and deciding it's a bad movie.

We haven't even been introduced to the story yet.

well the Enterprise still looks like the Enterprise, the Klingons are still identifyable as a warrior race with weird bumps on their heads and we have never seen Birds of Prey in that era. The Iconians, though, THAT would be a huge redisgn

Literally the only difference would be extending the "wings" a little.

Look I love STO, I'd love it if they used their Iconians, but I don't think that's what they're doing.

Extend the "wings" of the third one and you have the Red Angel.

Those spikey things? Well, if I squint really hard...I can't see anything anymore. If I squint a little less hard, yeah, I can see spikey things that look very different to the tentacle like visuals that were shown in 'Brother'

We've never seen the Iconians, they can design them any way they want. Sorry, STO doesn't count.

But it's almost certainly not the Iconians.

The Red Angels are signals sent by that alien being at the center of the Galaxy. Spock's trying to find them because he feels they will lead him to Sybok who's still running around trying to find Sha Ka Ree. Spock knows these signals are bad news and is trying to warn Sybok. At the season finale we'll all have a big Spock family reunion.
