Very beautiful, Ruaidrhi! :)

I went to the Belgian beer festival in Brussels yesterday with my (mainly) Brazilian friends.
Here's an "after"-picture - after beer, dinner, thunderstorm and apparently also after the last metro had already left...

Statue of the Greco-Roman god Vulcan atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. I took this photo last year. There are people on the tower's balcony if you want an idea of the scale...
Been there a couple of times. Then my sister-in-law happened to point out to my kids that you can look right up his tunic and see his bare butt. They couldn't stop laughing!

Oh, believe me -- I kept my distance, not only out of respect for its beak but because if I came too close it withdrew into its shell.

A few more shots for those interested in it:

 The sculptor actually modeled under the tunic?!

Took the kids to the beach yesterday, we all had our cameras, they've got the bug now too (and at least one shot is a direct copy of my brother's much better work)...

That's not technically within the borders of Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but rather on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A Depression era public works project that runs along the ridgeline of a mountain range, and connects Smoky Mountain with Shenandoah National Park.

This was plus or minus October 10th or so, when the foliage is at its peak. I live in New England (the most northeastern region of the US, including Boston) and we've pretty much got the market cornered on fall foliage. We must have been the only people last year to get out of New England to see the colors.

The National Parks are a passion of my wife and me. Been to 23, got 35 to go. I've got more pictures like that than I can shake a stick at.

I love the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall. I hope I can take a drive up there this year.

Sadly, some of my favorite foliage routes from when I lived in VT are washed out thanks to Irene. I think we'll do the Berkshires this year instead.

Plus we are going on our big vacation for the year to Iceland next week, so that will be fun.

Snapping turtle I spotted in my yard in February.

That looks like an alligator snapping turtle...
Nope - carapace isn't right and it's out of the water. That's a common snapper.

Ya, was wrong bout that one. We had a few in a pond up here in north jersey years ago. We had about ten smaller ones, but there was a pai of large ones. They were around two or three feet long beak to tail, ate the ducks nag geese living in the pond on occasion, and would sun themselves in the middle of the road that ran between the larger and smaller pond in the summer. One year a cop tried to push the larger one with a broom handle, the 'gator snapper bit the handle in two. Scared the crap out of the cop who declared that "it will move when it's ready" as he got back into his cruiser.

My kitten has discovered the joys of playing in shopping bags.

He also likes to stretch out on the stairs. I've almost tripped a few times...

A couple of shots from my camera phone of the smoke from the fire near Tehachapi:

From my car, stopped at the light...

And outside my house.
