I eat fries with ketchup.

Gotta get over that, actually. In April I will be going to Chicago for a week to see some baseball, and apparently they have a mind-block which prevents them from eating the stuff (on a hot dog, at least).

Up here in Ontario it's fries with gravy, or poutine, which is fries with gravy and cheese curd.

As a kid in America, the only way we ever ate fries was with ketchup. Then, at age 19, i backpacked across Europe for six weeks and in Amsterdam was introduced to fries with mayo. I never went back to ketchup again!

Oddly enough, on the very first date my husband and i had together, we went to a steak house. We both ordered fries.....and mayo! I was like, WTF? You eat fries with MAYO??? NO ONE in the US eats fries with MAYO!

And so, we got married.

Well, ok. There was more.........

I like mine with mayo too. I grew up in Seattle, though, which means I know the best condiment to compliment fries is tartar sauce.

Barbarians. The only way to eat fries is with salt - and when I'm feeling particularly freaky - a little ketchup.

Salt, pepper, and barbecue sauce is the only way to go.

That's what we had to cope with at University. Life was hell.

Chips go best with pepper, but if not available at the local chippy then a sparing amount of salt will be sufficient. I'm not a sauce or vinegar person, personally.

I love the weird glass building Rincewiend. May I ask where is it at... and "what" is it? It looks like shops but what do they sell? Is it all one shop or four separate ones? Sorry for all the questions but they really caught my curiosity.

It's here in Wageningen.
They are shops.
They used to be divided in 4 shops, but the Lunchroom on one side became so succesfull it now occupies the segment next to it as well.
The other 2 segments had many shops in them, but right now one is a hairdresser and the other is a tailoring-shop.

But if I'm at McDonalds, it's salt and salt alone.

I'm wondering, i noticed some of the Europeans specifically mention "Fries (or chips) with salt". Is that how you order it? I mean here we just say fries and they are automatically salted.

I have my fries/chips with mayo only because I can't get my hands on proper Dutch frietsaus here. I need to ask my brother, who lives in Amsterdam, to send me a bottle of the stuff the next time he sends one of his goody boxes. I'll never be a proper Brit, though, because I hate vinegar and can't have it on my chips. I'll always be a "furriner".

^ i'm British born and bred and i hate vinegar. i have my chips with tomato sauce on and nothing else.

randi, chips from a chippy maybe ordered with salt and/or vinegar. fries from MaccyD's or similar are automatically salted. home cooked chips are done however you prefer.

And I am a fries/chips and mayo kind of guy. I also enjoy them with vinegar and salt.
