Patrick Stewart Wants To Become A U.S. Citizen To Fight Trump

I am now applying for citizenship. Because I want to be an American, too."
Nice to see Sir Patrick intends to become an American by going through the legal immigration process, instead of "becoming an American" by overstaying his visa or illegally crossing one of the borders.

I seriously doubt that this is really his main reason for becoming a citizen
The top tax bracket in the UK (iirc) is 45%, President Trump's proposed top bracket is 33%.

Maybe this is the real reason Stewart want to be a citizen here? So he can hang onto more of his own money under Trump.

Anyone know if Patrick intends to have dual citizenship?

I'm sure Mr. Stewart would be the first to tell you that comparing the situations faced by wealthy celebrities emigrating from Britain to that of poverty stricken migrant workers desperate to support their families and seek a better life is incredibly stupid, but you already knew that.

Maybe you shouldn't assume that everyone is as cynical as you.

Poor people legally immigrate into this country every year, hundreds of thousands become citizens (legally) every year.

Many people who come to America under work or student visas, leave when their visas expire.

When my grandparents immigrated from Cuba they had next to nothing, they worked hard and studied and became citizens, and they observed the laws every step of the way.

I congratulate Patrick Stewart for being a man who observes the law, this is something to be admired.

I guess you shouldn't have voted for a reality TV star as President then.
Ahhh, yes, as reality TV star. However he did graduate from a prestigious school - the Wharton School of Business. So barely finishing high school is somewhat of a stretch to link Trump to. But then, you knew that.

I think if he wants to become an American, it should be because he loves America and wants to be a citizen of that love,
NOT because he hates Trump. That is not a good reason to do much of anything.

Why not both?
I don't think because you hate something about a country is a good reason to want to become a citizen of that country.
If that were the case, does he hate Trump worse than he hates the genocide in Somalia? Because that would be asinine.
He should move to Somalia and fight to stop the genocide, which is way worse that anything about Trump.

I doubt Trump is his only reason. And that's my point.

Of course, this completely glosses over the fact that up until recently the US allowed virtually unlimited migration from Cuba. We had minimum quotas, rather than maximums, and any Cuban who managed to land on US shores became free to apply for legal residency after a year.

The way our immigration system works right now is that there is a per-country limit in which we will not allow more than 7% of the visas granted in any given year to go to a single country. Anyone beyond that 7% can get on the waiting list, but you go to the back of the line. Guess which country's waiting list is the longest? Mexico.

The US allows 366,000 immigrant visas per year, though immigration for immediate relatives (parents, spouses, children) is not limited. No country may consume more than 7% of that limit in a given year. For 2017, the per-country limit is 25,620. The waiting list for immigrants from Mexico stands at 1.3 million. If you were to join that list right now, you'd be waiting decades for a chance to immigrate here legally.

While I don't think there is a problem with immigration limits per se, especially when they have reasonable exceptions, I think it's very easy to say "well, my ancestors waited in line, so why can't everyone else?" while remaining ignorant of the reality that there effectively is no line for a lot of people. Waiting decades for a chance to emigrate to another country isn't exactly tenable for the vast majority of people, so it's kind of a joke to call it a real option.

It's interesting how one can tout "respect for the law" as a positive in and of itself, as if laws are universally just and ethical. I certainly don't respect laws which are unjust or unethical, or which cause people to be treated cruelly or inhumanely.

There is a limit to the amount of immigrants our country can absorb. Waiting in line for decades is unfortunate, but it is not the United States responsibility to absorb every immigrant who wants to come here. This is reality - some will not make it to our shores.

That would make sense if the US was absorbing a lot of immigrants, but it's not. The annual limit amounts to about 0.1% of the total US population--virtually nothing.

A sovereign country has the more than the right, it has the responsibility to control its borders. At this time in our history, absorbing more immigrants is fraught with more danger than its existing population will accept. Maybe in the future this won't be so, but it is right now.

What part of my comment was xenophobic or alarmist? I thought we has a good exchange there, although we were coming at the topic from different ends.

I get where he's coming from. The exaggeration of supposed dangers posed by immigrants that we see so often isn't just bordering on hysteria, it's plain bizarre. Immigrants are people, so of course some of them will commit crimes, just like other citizens. The alleged danger posed by immigrants doesn't even register statistically compared to some actual problems like deaths caused by guns or poverty.

And since there's been talk about refugees today again: the crime rate among Syrian refugees is insanely low. Lower than that of the general population.

Honestly I take issue with the assertion that I should some how be ashamed of my comment. We all have different opinions, this is mine.

And you're welcome to voice it. Doesn't mean others aren't allowed to judge and criticize that opinion.
All opinions can be voiced but they're not all equally valid and reasonable.

Freedom of speech does not contain freedom from criticism.
