I am not the biggest fan of Season 3 - especially as it did the dirty on the S1 and S2 cast. Some of it feels a bit disconnected -and one of those odd threads was Picard's body at Daystrom station.

The original thought was this

Man, I think that’s an even worse idea.

And it’s literally him playing with his action figures. Hahaha…. Ugh.
It’s giving me a chuckle for how many times folks have rightfully ribbed the season as-is for feeling like Terry’s Toybox.

He’s not beating the fanfic allegations now.

Not at all.

In some regards, even if I did have issues with the season, it’s nice to see a real fan having a say in Trek. In other regards, being a fan doesn’t mean playing with your action figures while talking about your real professional Trek ideas on a podcast. It’s not a great look.

What possible reason would the Borg have to do that, Terry?
First Contact established Locutus was always more than just another drone (which was implicit in BoBW). Maybe the Queen thought Locutus, rather than being her consort, could instead be her heir and rebuild the Borg.

Making up some reason or another in-universe is the easy part. I can think of four or five novels, comics, and video games that already used the Picard versus Locutus premise, it's very attractive as a way of externalizing Picard's interiority. The hard part is making the execution worthy of the innate spectacle of the high-concept premise, especially since so many other people have already done it.

I'm not so sure I agree. Even in BoBW, the reasoning for the Borg assimilating Picard, besides gaining his Starfleet knowledge, was pretty flimsy. They certainly didn't need a 'voice' to speak for them. That was all just contrived drama for Riker's sake.

And as far as FC was concerned, once the Queen thought Data was a better 'consort' for her than Picard was, she was ready to dump him out the door. And even in that scenario, why would the queen need a 'consort,' and what made Data better than Picard? It was all just contrived nonsense for the stupid Borg queen concept.

The basic idea is that the Borg reanimated the dead Picard from season 1 and turned him into Locutus. So the whole idea is Picard vs. Locutus. Very fanfic.
I am not opposed to this idea at all.

Activision's Star Trek Armada computer game twenty-five years ago worked with this idea -- the leader of the Borg faction in the game is Locutus, cloned by the Borg with Dominion technology and given Picard's memories (since the Collective would have had them). I don't dislike Nemesis, but Picard battling a clone of Locutus rather than Shinzon would have been more compelling and more powerful.

Personally, if I were writing the story, I might even make it so that there's some question about which is the "real" Picard, that perhaps the Locutus who was brought aboard the D in "Best of Both Worlds II" was already a clone, with Picard concluding that it ultimately doesn't matter as he has the memories and believes he is real, so for all intents and purposes he is real.

I like this setup, and it could've been a great plotline for season 2 to explore after turning Picard into a golem. Unfortunately, I don't think the show had the capacity to have that much introspection about the characters once Michael Chabon stepped down from the showrunner role following the first season.

So much of S3 is fanwanky right from the very moment it opens with “in the 25th century” with the same TWOK typeface.

What’s even more remarkable is how many went along with the TWOK callbacks despite being vocal of how Trek has cribbed from TWOK. That “Project Khan” bit in S2 was rightfully mocked, and yet somehow all those criticisms were completely dropped for S3. Especially by the folks who griped about it the most like Robert Meyer Burnett.
