Official TrekBBS Fantasy Baseball League!

For anyone that missed it, today's the last day for selecting keepers in the Keeper League. Anyone without a K next to their name is going back in the pool, so don't forget to check one last time before this afternoon's deadline...

And still need two players for the yearly league, if anyone is up for it, or knows someone that might. Otherwise, we'll either have to play with 10 people, or cancel it. :(

Scout, I know it's not optimal to have 10 teams for the yearly league since all teams may end up looking like all-start teams - have you thought of possibly increasing the roster for all the teams (ie 2 catchers, 2 1B, etc.) - this might be a way of diluting the talent on teams a little bit and make it a bit more challenging?

Your thoughts?

Yeah, now I'm getting a bit serious. We've been able to get 12 people before with two leagues. I know times are tight and things change year after year, but 2 more people. All you got to do is email Scout, get an account on ESPN (Well worth it anyway), and sign up. The draft is 2 weeks from today and hopefully it doesn't get canceled. Even if we have to go to 10, I'm fine with that, but it's a lot better with 12. Please consider signing up and maybe we can get a full league before the weekend.

10's tough. Could add to the roster requirements to try and even it out, but would much prefer if 2 more people just joined. if no one here wants in, everyone already playing should try and talk a buddy into joining, should be able to get 2 people out of that. One of my friends from home is playing in the Keeper League because of a similar issue a couple years ago...

Need to sort this out in the next couple of days, so bug a buddy at work, or a friend, brother, whatever...

Ok, I got a friend from work to join, so we're at 11. Someone else has to man up and get us one more player, though.

Also, I juggled the teams a bit so I could put my friend in my division. If someone from the American League side is the one to get the last guy, I can do the same there if they want...

The keeper picks are now in the books! I've checked through some of the teams, and there are some interesting omissions...

Of the 12 teams, 10 of us have chosen to go with 6 keepers, while the Minnesota Golden Gophers chose 4 and the McCosh Almighties 5.

I'm really looking forward to next weeks draft now...Time to turn around last years misfortunes.

a few really odd choices, honestly. Dropping a few surprising names while keeping questionable players, and then just some tough cuts for a couple teams with more keepers than spots...

I'm still mad that A-Rod's average draft position fell due to injury. Before that, I had the 1st, 2nd, and 7th picks in the draft :p And then Kinsler and Howard were in the low 20s, and McLouth in the 40s somewhere, but rising. A-Rod dropping into the 20s hurts my pride, but the team can handle missing him for a month or two, just gotta draft a scrub to play a while without killing me.

As far as random drops in the keeper league, how was Beltran a non-keeper, exactly? He's a 2nd round pick, and going to put up 25-25 numbers without too much problem. How he got dropped, but Pegs kept Rivera and Ryan is beyond me. I'm sure Sportzkid doesn't mind, though, as he's an easy pickup. :p

Yearly league draft is in a week, still need 1 player, who will step up and play, or find a friend that'll play? Draft is next wednesday!

Interesting that you've mentioned this. I've done a little rough statistical analysis (note: I'm no mathematitian - or English major, seeing how I spelled mathgjkhakjdgh) of each of the teams, and the keepers that we've kept. Based upon ESPN's ranking of players, I have calculated the average "ranking" of each keeper team, and yours Scout, not surprisingly, has the highest avarage ranking (21.7 - and if ARod wasn't injured, this would easily be ~15-16).
Here are the numbers that I got (Team, average keeper ranking):

Amish Assassins 32.5
KWFC 21.7
DEM 33.2
Arizona Roadrunners 84.8
Mapping Fools 103
Admirals 61.7
Ow My Hip Hurts 22.5 ---- love the new team name:guffaw:
Habs All-Stars 90
Golden Gophers 38.5 *
Donkey Run 131.2 (This would be 36.2 without Navarro)
McCosh Almighties 27.8 *
When Pegs Fly 52.2

*This takes into account the teams that have only 4 or 5 keepers...
And also shows the difference between the AL (ave team 68.4) and the NL (ave 48.1).

From these results, one could definately argue that some teams have made "questionable" keeper picks, as even a team that was chosen by a computer should have and average pick under ~36.5.

Some teams have some catching up to do in the draft...:vulcan:

I thought it was 2 weeks? Did you move it up a week?

Sorry, I looked at the calendar too quickly. TWO weeks from yesterday. Draft is still the 25th for the yearly league, 26th for the keeper league.

Nice, I'm already winning something :D

Yeah, that pretty easily shows that there were a few "bad" keepers in there somewhere. Often the result of loving an older player, or keeping for a position rather than talent. In this format, you've just gotta keep your best 6 players, regardless of where they play, and sort it out during the draft. I don't have a single pitcher on my team right now, for example.

Stretching for a rookie you think will have a big year is one thing, keeping a guy past his prime, based upon a name, is bad. Again, to use an example, Beltran was probably one of the best 2-3 players on Peg's team, but he got dropped in favor of lower-ranked closers. Not a real good play, unless you think Beltran is way overranked or going to tank. Matt Kemp was on another team that dropped him. He's ranked in the 20s or 30s, so probably dropped him in favor of "worse" players.

Really only wanted to keep anyone ranked 70th or higher, as we're in a 12 team league, and you need to keep 6 rounds. If they were much higher than 75-80, you could probably grab them in the first couple rounds after the keeper rounds are over.

I thought we had until 4:00 today to select keepers- I just went to change my keepers (was going to switch Beltran and Ryan as soon as I was sure Beltran would be healthy this year) and realized I was a day late. Guess I should have checked earlier, but I've had a lot of shit to do the past few weeks and didn't even think about baseball. Between that screw-up and knowing that I won't be able to make the draft, I seem to be starting behind the 8-ball this year. Oh well, it's a long season and maybe I can still make something of my team- just have to go with a new strategy.

dunno how anyone else feels, but I wouldn't be against having the commish swap out Ryan and Beltran for you, considering the circumstances that exist in your situation. Then again, the commish is the guy that has 1st pick and would be likely to pick him up, so depends on how he feels about it :p

I might be willing to consider it, but I did send out an e-mail using the espn league page the night before the keeper deadline and one a week or so before that, so gave people warning. Is there some real life circumstances that have kept you from changing besides the mix up in timing? just looking for all the information. Scout you refer to this situation, but not sure what that is since I don't read a lot of threads around here any more.

I wouldn't be against the keeper swap, but if the change was made, I suggest we label it as a one-time thing that won't happen again. The keeper date was in there for a while on the league page, and everybody had plenty of opportunity to make their selections. I might want to change one of mine, too. ;)

Actually, if the change was allowed, might I suggest that every team would be allowed to make one change to their keeper if they wanted? Or just bump the keeper date back to the 18th (that's the next available keeper date on the league page). Then it would be fair for everybody to reconsider what they want.

If you guys are still looking for one more for whatever the single year league is, I guess I'd be willing to fill the slot. Not REALLY into adding another league, but if you need the slot filled, I can be filler. :p

I already told sportzkid to leave it as is. I had a lot of shit going on with my brother dying down in Chile, but the bottom line is I screwed up. I was hedging my bets by waiting to set my final keeper list and it backfired. And who knows? Maybe my new strategy that I'm working on will succeed. Of course, since I won't be able to make either draft, I'll need autopick to do a helluva job. :)

yep, we're all ready to go. Coaster has decided to stop hiding behind his skirt and face me directly, taking over the Time Lords team from EMH, who had to bow out. We're back to full strength and ready to rock next week :techman:
