OK I can see that. But Robocop is a bit obscure as well.
Robocop was very popular back in the 80's. It won an Academy Award, Saturn Awards and is an 80's sci-fi classic. Not as obscure as you might think.

I feel like reality has surpassed the absurdity of the original Robocop film at this point, we're pretty much there except our consumer tech isn't as clunky.
Which of my comments are you asking about? If it's the budget issue, it should be self-evident that a show set in a consistent Earth location in the near future would cost less to produce than a show that has to create multiple exotic alien environments, especially given that the new Stargate series would have done location filming in multiple different countries around the world.
If the question is why Amazon would have liked the RoboCop pitch better than the Stargate pitch, that's impossible to answer without knowing the specifics of either, and without knowing the preferences and priorities of the people who made the decision.

Very easily. Even as an R rated film it still ended up with action figures, comics, cartoon and such.
Stargate got toys and eventually a TV show but it's far more niche. Plus whatever aspects of the pitch to MGM made it sound more viable.

Really, Amazon greenlighting something else over Stargate is not the end of the world. We can get over it.

Right, and it's not like they only have one series slot, so it's weird to treat it as a direct competition anyway.
Same thing with Alien and the Aliens sequel. Both rated R and both merchandising juggernauts, particularly the second one. I was 15 when I saw Aliens with a friend of mine from high school. Didn't even need to sneak in - everybody was going to see it, of all ages. Then again, things were a bit more permissive back then. I honestly didn't find anything particularly shocking about that film. I guess, by that time, I was already pretty jaded by most things.
US ratings are funny. What exactly got it the R rating?
Graphic violence and profanity.
Not sure if you're referring to RoboCop or Alien/s, but in both cases it would've been the extreme violence and the profanity, and in RoboCop's case the drug use as well. RoboCop actually had to cut back on the filmed violence to avoid an X rating, since Verhoeven was going for satire of violent American cop movies by taking the violence to absurd extremes. Cutting it down to get an R rating may have actually undermined the absurdity he was going for.
I've watched both multiple times and as for Aliens movies I still have a hard time thinking how that was an R rating considering there's been other horror movies of the same period that never got an R rating for gore as well, though I can't pull any titles going off memory but I know I've seen a few.
As for Robocop yeah Verhoeven was going for over the top absurd and with that one I can see why they had to tone it down. Some scenes feel like they were cut down like the woman he rescues from the street. I felt like that was heavily edited from what was supposed to happen. It could have been a lot worse.
The first Robocop film is ridiculously good when you look under the covers. The sequels not so much. I don't have high hopes for this new series getting it.
I do recommend the making of Robocop film called RoboDoc. Now, that's good.
