Yeah, unfortunately I feel that's true. A shame how one single-season abortion killed an entire franchise.

How did it ruin the show?
To be a little fair, "Stargate Origins" was a mini series of shorts, not full episodes, and could reasonably be written off.
It was later edited together as one movie and released in that manner to various streaming services and even some cable service's On Demand content (which is how I eventually watched it).
To say it's not good is a gross understatement, but it hardly "ruined the franchise." It's basically the kind of disposable fluff you'd expect from a SyFy telemovie twenty years ago, or an Asylum movie today. Pretty terrible, yet you feel a compelling need to watch it through to the end anyway and instantly forget it once you're done. SG-1 episodes like Emancipation or The Light or the animated Stargate Infinity series did more damage than Origins could ever hope to.
That said, I am amused by the story about MGM approaching Brad Wright about a Stargate revival in 2019 he refused to talk to them until he got an apology for Origins, which he did get.

I actually found Origins more fun than I expected. It wasn't brilliant, but it was moderately effective. I thought the acting was middle-of-the-road at best (though the lead actress was fairly good), the writing was fine, and the FX were neither good nor bad enough to be notable. I wouldn't say it's a story that urgently needed to be told, especially since the way they rationalized why these events were unknown in the series makes the whole thing feel kind of incidental, aside from a bit of continuity porn giving explanations for things we didn't need explained. Still, it was entertaining and had interesting character work. And it did mesh better than I expected with series continuity. The angle about Nazis and alien tyrants making an alliance reminded me of the rarely-seen Filmation Flash Gordon animated movie from 1979, in which Ming the Merciless was plotting to provide weapons to Hitler.
It's not good though.

Point is a spin-off cannot ruin a franchise; bad episodes/ seasons cannot ruin or taint good ones, not unless there is wasted build-up, unanswered questions...
One can always choose not to watch or to stop watching, reviews can help. I dislike SG-1 seasons 9+10, and I consider SGA a failure overall, but those parts certainly did not destroy the stuff I enjoy. These days, there are also Harry Potter fans whining about the upcoming HP show because it was "unnecessary", it would damage the IP, yada yada yada. Pathetic. If you are not interested, simply IGNORE the damn thing.
Regarding the cancellation, I think it is a shitty move to do that months after the announcement, but still you know what's going on. Better than announcing a new project and leaving it in development hell, see Disney SW, the Halo show (first mentioned in 2013), and I am still waiting for details on Amazon's Wh40k series.
A reboot may be the better option. At the end of SGA, Earth has has kind of achieved everything it could have dreamed of with ships dominating the MW and beyond; it is too similar to Star Trek. SG team in danger? No problem, ship is always minutes or hours away, ready to beam them up. A key feature, if you will, was to depict ordinary people from today's world fighting aliens as underdogs.

Easiest decision ever. Even film to film.
But a series set on multiple alien planets would probably be a far more expensive production than one set in futuristic Detroit (presumably).
And of course, it's never just about what topic your story is about, but how well you tell it. Maybe the Amazon people just thought the RoboCop pitch was a better story than the Stargate pitch.
