New Phaser and Rifle Revealed

Here you go:

The thing about these designs, along with the communicator, is that the show doesn't take place at the time of "The Cage" but a few years later.

Yes, Kirk used the old Cage-era equipment and outfits for one frickin' episode, because pilot budget, where his name was also given as "James R. Kirk..." and back when we watched the show on NBC, those designs popped up out of nowhere after several weeks of the newer stuff and then disappeared again the following week. So there's got to be some limit to nitpicking (doesn't there)?

I'm impressed and surprised at how exactly the designers have transferred every little detail of the TOS phaser pistols over to their new ones. If this was being presented as a rebooted Kirk-era Star Trek (and it is, more or less, TOS-era) the techie trekkies would be beside themselves with joy.

Never understood that non-military claim."

Gene said so, therefore so say we all.
There's that...
....and there's also the fact that they really don't do any of the military stuff the way the real-world military does military stuff.

Granted, they aren't purely a scientific/exploration expedition, either -- but they don't seem to be military. ENT's starfleet had the MACOs, and THAT made that ship more military, but TOS, TNG, etc ships' crews did not include such soldiers. They have weapons, but they are not used in the way real-world warships use their weapons.

If war happens to break out, then of course the protagonist ship in TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY could become military, but that's not what they are under the normal circumstances in which those TV series took place.

You've answered yourself there.
In the United States where I live, and probably in other countries as well, civilian police such as SWAT teams and sometimes even riot control are equipped with body armor, assault rifles, armored personnel carriers, and other military-style gear. These are members of police forces that, unlike France's Gendarmerie or Canada's Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are not and have never been military forces.
