The thing that intrigues me is that the new Type IIs have essentially the same lines as the originals. It's just some of the details and finish that have changed.

Man, I want a full on metal version of that thing. I haven't wanted a really high end prop weapon that badly since I first saw the Tomosuke Blade Runner blasters.

I haven't agreed with every design decision, but the props department on this show is killing it so far.

What I love is that if you took "The Cage" pistol, the one from the Kelvin in the beginning of the 2009 movie, then this one, it's a near-perfect evolution.

And it looks like the trigger section is the hand phaser clipped into the body of the rifle! Beautiful!!!!
There's definitely similarity there, but look closely at the grips ... they're slightly different. And the open area above the Type III's rear grip cuts off the top of the Type II, so I don't think it clips on.

Do you think the barrels still rotate?

Now that you mention it, you're right. Similar in the placement of pieces of the Type II, but not quite. So it's probably a unit that might not clip in, like the Type II.

Looking closely at the barrels, I can make out seam lines, so I'm thinking they might. It's a very flush fit, but it looks like they might!

I love it!

Yep, me too! I'm definitely hitting my squee quota for the day!

And ... it is possible that the Type II grip brakes down more so that it can fit into the rifle. The different grips might be explained as different, interchangeable power packs?

New phaser really is fantastic looking. I know TNG was trying to do something different and less resembling an actual gun like the TOS phaser, but it's hard to beat that iconic look. The new one looks updated but still very much in the spirit of what came before.

Looking closely at the above image, I think we see a designation for the Phaser Rifle: AV M36.

Now I know exactly what I'm asking Santa for Christmas! "Not that cheap-ass AV M35 with the green beams!"
I can't see your image.
