The negative reaction [in that Twitter thread] to showing weapons from a science fiction action series is ... disturbing.

It's cool. Prefer the hand phaser but then, FC aside I've generally not been that impressed with phaser rifle props. I also struggle to see the need for rifles when your sidearm can disintegrate someone.

Better accuracy, longer range, better cooling, longer power duration are some of the advantages I see. I can imagine a Type II quickly overheating in heavy use ... and then draining its power cells after a few high-intensity shots.

It's biggerer. You can disintegrate more, for longer, maybe quicker.

OK, no seriously, in universe: Ship's phasers are more capable than hand phaser pistols, so ergo these are in-between (though still much closer to pistols, no doubt).

Someone in the twitter replies said that showing weapons was 'disturbing'

Another one called it an 'NRA' advert.

So far I prefer the Type II hand phaser. This looks a little too much like a cross between ENT and the movie era, IMO. But it's still cool.

And  at some of the twitter comments.

It has three barrels!!!! Like Kirk's rifle from WNMHGB!

    Dayyyum!

If only all other departments (costumes, make-up) would be on the same level as the prop department...

I completely missed the three barrels ... I thought that was only one, but you're right! Okay, now I love it even more!

How absurd. Phasers have been part of every single Trek incarnation, and changed so frequently they became visual shorthand for the era. I do wonder whether some have ever actually watched the show.

Well, you know Twitter -- they're probably seeing this completely out of context and think Paramount/CBS is pushing the phaser as a symbol. Without having seen the other prop teases yet. Plus, there's a contingent of the population who hate weapons and are as vocal about it as a Vegan at a Texas BBQ.

[wonders briefly about what he just stepped in]

Even Andy Probert was negative about it ... I think he missed a lot of important details.

I only like that one about 70%. Still way better than Discovery's. I like Beyond's phaser alot. I still hate the stupid rotating barrel, but everything else about it is cool. I also like the non-cylinder barrell. If you're not having to discharge a bullet, it makes sense you don't have to keep a round tip. That alone makes it feel more like a futuristic device.

    Honestly, it's probably just that.

To be fair: If I had only seen that video, without any other context or the other props, just the rifle and the phrase "lock and load", I'd probably a little bit confused myself. Star Trek always had weapons. But it was never military-SF. In fact, the "sexy-ness" of weapons was consistently toned down, which IMO helped a lot to tell more serious stories instead of shiny action.

Putting solely guns front and center for a new Trek show would be extremely weird. But that's not the case here. More a point of confusion and missing context, really, than idiocy.

Patiently waiting for the video showing the new tricorder...
