MLB Offseason 2011

I think I will watch Game 6 of the '86 WS tonight in Gary's honor.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am.

- John 14:1-3

Manny's hilarious. If nothing else he'll provide some amusement.

The Cubs and Red Sox finally settled on compensation for Epstein. The Cubs gave them right-handed reliever Chris Carpenter (not that Chris Carpenter, unfortunately :p), rated as their #13 prospect. They'll also be swapping players to be named later.

I don't really know much about Carpenter. What's his upside (if any)?

I can't remember, did he cause as much distaste in the Dodger clubhouse as he did in Boston?

So I don't suppose if the Sox and Cardinals play in interleague, both Chris Carpenters could face each other?

The "distaste" in Boston appears to be nothing more than the classic Red Sox smear machine. Manny, Nomar, Derek Lowe, Pedro, Damon, Francona, Epstein -- no one escapes that organization without getting his name dragged through the mud.

In Cleveland and Boston, Manny used to spend at least 30 minutes a day trying to hit nothing but outside sliders after he had done all his other batting and fielding practice. The guy is serious about his hitting.

Yep, sadly. As a fan of the Red Sox I find it distasteful how the organization, some of the local media, and even some of the fans treat players when they leave the team, unless it's through retirement. God forbid David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, or Dustin Pedroia (just as examples) leave to play for different teams before calling it a career.

^ So you didn't mind when Manny was hiding out in the Green Monster, taking calls on a cellphone during games, faking injuries so he wouldn't have to play, failing to run out ground balls, etc.?

Sure I did, but the good far outweighs the bad. I prefer to remember the positive things Manny brought to the club, rather than dwell on the negative.

Given that a number of those stories only came out as part of the aforementioned Red Sox tradition of doing a hatchet job on people leaving the team, I'm not inclined to care about them too much (and I'm not even close to being a Red Sox fan).

Basically, Manny owns and he gave baseball this:

Glad to see him back in the game.

Just saw where the Red Sox get Chris Carpenter in exchange for Theo now. I was a little confused when I saw the blurb on the news.

The sad thing is that this is the best thing Cherington has done to improve the team this offseason -- and I love the mental image of Cherington thinking he got the Chris Carpenter in exchange for Theo.

As for Chris Carpenter the Lesser, he's performed decently in the minors and had a fairly mediocre half-cup of coffee in the majors in 2011 (9.2 IP, 7 BB, 3 ER), but he's a two-pitch guy and his minor league K/9 and BB/9 numbers don't light the world on fire (although they aren't nearly as terrible as Ivan Nova's -- that guy is going to regress horribly this year, but that's another discussion). He was ranked as a top 20 prospect in the Cubs system last year, but he doesn't project to be more than middle relief.

At the end of the day, Theo Epstein for "guy who may be a mediocre middle reliever" is a win for the Cubs, and I'm cool with that.

Okay.... some moron thinks he bought the Marlins for $10 million.

Oh, please, please let this case be assigned to a judge who actually lets this proceed, if only for the sheer comedy value. (Getting Jeffrey Loria out of MLB would be a nice bonus.)

While I think that they should have gotten more for Theo, they got something, so I'm not really gonna complain.

I do take issue with your comment about Cherington's off season. I think he has had a fine one. While it's not the best predicament to be in, being butted right up against the luxury tax, but he made due. His closer left to sign a huge contract, and then they decided to make one of their elite arms a starter, where his benefit could be maximized. He then was able to rebuild the bullpen with a quality set up guy and closer, with Melancon and Bailey, by trading parts that they didn't really need. He was able to get some right handed hitting help for the outfield.

While I do hope that they do somehow coerce Oswalt to the team, I think he has done alright rotation wise. Moving Bard I think was a good idea, and he has signed enough retreads that still have a little bit of talent, that hopefully one of them can fill in till Matsuzaka returns. I think they will still need more, but what team doesn't need more pitching come the middle of the year (besides the Phillies).

I don't think it's been a world beating off-season, but I think he was able to fill their holes as best he could.

Ryan Braun has won his appeal of his positive drug test, the first time one has been overturned; his challenge was based on a breach of the chain of custody. MLB is reportedly livid.
