I wish the Red Sox would get another pitcher
I read that they're in talks with Edwin Jackson, but he's a Scott Boras client, so who knows how that's going to go.

The Red Sox did sign Cody Ross to a one-year deal, so at least they added a decentish outfielder. He'll probably be their starter in right for most of the season.

Yeah, Jackson's situation is pretty odd. He's a productive starter and he'd be a fine middle-of-the-rotation guy for almost any team in the league, but he certainly isn't worth $15 million a season (his current asking price) and he sure as hell isn't worth more than two or three years.

Looking at the Colorado Rockies roster reminds me of the line in Major League "These guys don't look too fuckin' good."

Same can be said about the Oakland A's. For them, I think this season is pretty much irrelevant. It's all about getting a new stadium.

^Same can be said about a bunch of teams at this point.

I'm a Mets fan. They're an unbridled train wreck of a shitstorm these days. They got their new stadium, which I was not terribly impressed with. They are just an ownership mess right now though with the Madoff scandal looming over them.

Middling team, no big free agents, farm system is shot, alienated fan base, etc. Not a fun time in Flushing these days.

The Cubs may -- may -- be playoff-bound by 2013, but any sort of long-term success will require several years of restocking the cupboard. Cespedes is already 26, and if it turns out that he can't hit at the major league level ... well, that clearly wasn't a risk that Theo was willing to take, especially since Cespedes' agent was looking for a six-year deal (which the Marlins offered, and he nearly accepted). Oakland got him because they were willing to pay $9 million a year and let him become a free agent in four years. The current rumor going around is that Lew Wolff has been told he'll be able to publicly announce the San Jose move within the next few weeks, which is why A) Beane signed an extension through 2019 and B) the team is suddenly throwing a little bit of cash around (they also desperately want Manny).

The Cubs are in on Jorge Soler, however, and word is that he's currently Theo's top target. Makes sense, too -- sign him to four or five years, throw him in high A, and see what you've got in him when 2014 spring training rolls around.
