Random sports thought: there should be some notable baseball game played on Christmas Day - an MLB exhibition game, a minor leagues all-stars game, an East vs. West Coast event, whatever, but something. Who cares if it's the offseason? If anything, that'd make it more interesting. If Christmas were during the NFL's off season, would they lack the swagger to put on a game of some kind? I highly doubt it.
If baseball wants to be serious about retaining the title of "America's pastime," it should put on an event on the country's biggest holiday of the year. If the NBA can put on five games, and the NFL two, then baseball should be able to put on one.
I imagine people would raise holy hell if a star player were to suffer a season-ending injury during a meaningless exhibition game in December.
I happen to think it's quite nice that the NHL has a scheduled three-day break for Christmas every year--which it's done since, I think, 1971--and I wish the NBA and NFL would do the same.
