MLB Off Season 24-25

Random sports thought: there should be some notable baseball game played on Christmas Day - an MLB exhibition game, a minor leagues all-stars game, an East vs. West Coast event, whatever, but something. Who cares if it's the offseason? If anything, that'd make it more interesting. If Christmas were during the NFL's off season, would they lack the swagger to put on a game of some kind? I highly doubt it.

If baseball wants to be serious about retaining the title of "America's pastime," it should put on an event on the country's biggest holiday of the year. If the NBA can put on five games, and the NFL two, then baseball should be able to put on one.

I imagine people would raise holy hell if a star player were to suffer a season-ending injury during a meaningless exhibition game in December.

I happen to think it's quite nice that the NHL has a scheduled three-day break for Christmas every year--which it's done since, I think, 1971--and I wish the NBA and NFL would do the same.

@Timby!!!

Good to see you, sir!

Agree or disagree? The 10 fanbases that have the greatest right to be frustrated at how their teams are run:

10. Marlins
9. Cardinals
8. Rockies
7. Cubs
6. Pirates
5. Blue Jays
4. Twins
3. White Sox
2. Mariners
1. Angels
I'd put the A's at the top and bump everybody down accordingly. I find it interesting that you didn't include the Rays. Their baseball operation has been nothing short of brilliant considering the relatively miniscule payrolls they have to work with, but...their handling of the stadium has been ham-handed and tone-deaf. I get the feeling that the commissioner has told Sternberg that he signed the stadium deal and to suck it up. I could be wrong of course... :vulcan:

As a Jays fan, totally agree that we should be on this list.

How many star players do we have to be in on, offer the most money to, only to be a bridesmaid, never a bride? How many times are we going to hear "oh, it's a different country" or something about taxes?

A good team finds ways to get past those problems. A good team doesn't allow a generational talent to twist in the wind without a contract or allow another star player to be constantly rumoured to be traded.

Ownership, the Canadian cable giant Rogers, only seems interested in keeping the team just competitive enough to get butts in the seats and eyes on their TV channels, the only place to watch the Jays. They brought in Shapiro from Cleveland, where he did exactly that, keeping the Indians just competitive enough to keep people interested, but never actually made a winner. He brought in Atkins, who spouts out word salad whenever he is asked anything. Both of them inherited a team built by Anthopoulos that first year and then the wheels fell off. Both managers they have chosen, Montoyo and Schneider, are cheap options that fall into line with spending as little as possible. Yes, they made a big investment in Skydome and the spring training site, but they don't seem to use it to attract players.

For any one who remembers the mid 2000's up until the two years they made ALCS runs, the Jays are going to be back in an empty stadium while the Yankees and Red Sox pass them by.

Yeah, but you guys have Geddy Lee!

That’s gotta count for something.

Yeah, I think he personally donated a collection of 200 autographed baseballs to the Negro League Museum. I've seen 'em.

In house fighting in San Diego. Owner died at the end of 2023. His widow is suing his brothers for control, citing fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.

The two Yankees fans who grabbed Mookie Betts have been banned indefinitely.

Phillies reliever Jeff Hoffman goes to the Blue Jays for 3 years, $33 million. Does he get to compete for the closer job?

I was one year old when he first started doing Brewers radio...

RIP Mr. Baseball. :(

Yeah, that was the least interesting outcome, unfortunately.

The poor Blue Jays. They keep trying, bless them.
